Mental Health of Refugees in Europe
1. Mental Health of Refugees in Europe
I choose this topic, because I think that there is an enourmous lack of information about and a serious defecit in the regocnization and treatment of refugees with mental health issues in general and more specific : critical incident stress or post traumatic stress disorder.
I want to give a broad overview of who are refugees, which laws do employ for them and how does the political system in Europe deal with them.
After that I would like to concentrate on my two main aspects :
ABR (critical incident stress) and
PTSD ( post traumatic stress disorder).
First I am going to explain both and then I am going to specify on the topic of ABR and
PTSD in refugees in Europe.
We are going to see how people in asylum and refugees get treated and what forms of psychosocial support there is for them.
2. Facts about Displaced People
According to UN DESA there are 214 mio. migrants in the world. ( UN DESA, 2010).
Furthermore there are 27,5 mio. IDP1 in 2010 ( Norwegian Refugee Council, 2010) and
15,4 mio. refugees worldwide ( UNHCR, 2010).
Europe is hosting 72,1 mio. immigrants ( UN DESA, 2008) and 1,6 mio refugees ( UNHCR
2010). 594 000 refugees are said to stay in Germany and 10, 8 mio immigrants are living
