Betta splendens, or Siamese fighting fish, have been previously used to study the affects of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI) on aggression levels. Specifically, the SSRI used in most studies is Fluoxetine, which can be found in the medication Prozac. Betta splendens are most readily used for a number or reasons; they are easily obtained, very cost efficient, and they display strong aggressive patterns that are easily observed. Examples…
Mental illness is apparent in Hamlet and One Flew Over the Cukoo’s Nest. Although the main characters from each book are prisoners to different disorders, it is very clear that they are not mentally stable.…
The biological approach to psychopathology states that abnormal behaviour is a result of the brain not functioning correctly. This approach treats psychological disorders in the same way as physical orders. It suggests 4 main causes of abnormality: brain injury, infection, neurotransmitters and genetics.…

The story of Chris McCandless shows a rebellious free spirit trying to live his life to the fullest. But is the story as black and white as it looks? “Into the Wild” by Jon Krakauer is a true story about the adventure of Chris McCandless. He travels around the country and mooches off people before he goes to Alaska and tragically dies. The early trauma to Chris caused him to be mentally unstable. Due to the similarities from Chris’ childhood and the authors I believe there has to be a romanticization of the story to better fit his ideal self. The author is manipulating the story to make the idea of living off the land and being a rebel better than it truly is. Chris could have had a possible mental illness as a result of early childhood…
Girl Interrupted (1999) is a film depicting a youthful female in the 1960s battling with the instability of her own emotional sickness (Mangold, (n.d.)). With the influence of her parents, Susanna Kayson concedes herself into a psychiatric and is later determined to have Borderline Personality Disorder. Her fight demonstrates that those agonies from a psychiatric disorder may not generally meet the cliché picture depicted by the overall population. Other characters in this film did a fabulous depiction of symptoms of sicknesses, for example, an extreme dietary issue, grandiose fantasies, sociopathic propensities, and bipolar disorder. However, the actual diagnoses are unclear. The film demonstrated the individual disappointment and perplexity required in understanding one's disorder in a period when society needed much knowledge into a psychiatric disorder. This paper goes for examining the character's diagnosis regarding the DSM-IV, discussing about the obvious etiology of the…

ilFilm Review Paper: This course tries to cover how psychology and abnormal behavior is often covered by the media. Sometimes life imitates art just as art often imitates life. For better or worse, society’s understanding of mental illness is strongly influenced by media. Nonetheless, it allows for the study of disorders, their etiology, and their diagnosis. For this paper, you are to choose a character from a movie on the list below and write a case description that includes a multi-axial DSM-IV diagnosis. The paper should be 2-3 pages and include the following:…
A lot of people want to downplay mental illnesses. They want to say “Oh, it’s not me or one of my loved ones, so it’s not important to me.” Or worse, some people say that they are faking it to get attention. There are many mental disorders ranging from anxiety, to eating disorders, to substance abuse and alcoholism. The ones that come to mind most often, though, are anxiety, depression, and schizophrenia. Many people kill themselves or others due to these three disorders.…
The medical of abnormality model has dominated the psychiatric profession since the last century. The underlying assumption of this model is that mental illnesses resemble physical illnesses and can therefore be diagnosed and treated in a similar way. Just as physical illnesses are caused by disease producing germs, genetic factors, biochemical imbalances or changes to the nervous system, it is assumed that this is also true of mental illnesses. Because it assumes that mental disorders arise from such physical causes, the medical model is therefore a biological model.…
Albert Fish a psychiatric phenomenon, known for his sexual fetishes is what interested me to research sexual abnormalities. Sexual sadism will be the topic of my final project. “The feeling of sexual excitement resulting from administering pain, suffering, or humiliation to another person”(Fahmy, n.d.). The pain is real whether it is physical or psychological in nature. Sexual Sadism has been defined ambiguously in the DSM; it includes both sadistic sexual fantasies and the acting out of such fantasies (with the resultant harm or death to the victims). Sexual Sadism is a mental disorder; it is one of several paraphilias. “A paraphilia is a condition in which a person's sexual arousal and gratification depend on fantasizing about and engaging in sexual behavior that is atypical and extreme”(“Paraphilias”, 2013). Below I will describe the neuropsychological disorder, Sexual Sadism. Included in this analysis will be a brief history, the diagnostic criteria and the epidemiology.…
This type of mental illness can be related to disability or distress. The mental disorder can be reflected in the combination of a person’s action, feeling, thought, or perception. Many of our fellow Filipinos specifically Bulakeños suffer from mild and even severe stress. This might be due to economic instability, genes, and different problems an individual may encounter. This condition can be referred as Neurosis or psychosis in general terms. Neurosis is a mental disorder that involves distress but should not be mistaken already as psychosis. Psychosis is a condition when someone is actually said to “loss contact with reality”.…
