Summary of Mentoring Session
The mentoring session entailed a meeting with the juvenile assigned to me. Even though, he appeared well groomed his gestured showed that he was reluctant to share information with me. He began by citing his confidence in his academic prowess and according to him all was well in his life. The first thing we discussed was his school life. He cited that school life was easy for him because he is good academically. I began traversing him through various domains of life. However, …show more content…
he refused to answer a number of my question because he thought that all was well with him. According to my assessment, he was becoming real with himself and was just having a blanket view of his life. It was not possible for me to have check through his file so as to gain knowledge of his background. This would have enabled me to understand the basis of his evaluation of real and deceptive world characteristic of many juveniles.
I had to press harder to getting him open up to me. At last, when he opened up he stated the issues he needed me to address. He stated that he needed hair cut and also a pair of new shoes for school. It was evident the he lacked many other things as we continued with our conversation. I noted some unbecoming behavior in him that I was uncomfortable with. In the process of our conversation, he would occasionally draw his hands which made me feel uncomfortable. When we completed the session, he came forward to me and shook my hands. Even though I was not at ease, I kept calm given that our training demands that we do not shows offensive gestures to our subjects.
Reaction to the Mentoring Session
I got to meet this juvenile in corridor of their meeting. His grooming was remarkable but his gestures were a great bother to me. I had to pretend to be at ease so as to finish the work assigned to me. The onset of our conversation was not easy because the juvenile was a bit closed up. He was not willing to do a reality check on his life and this gave me very hard time. At first, he was very closed up and he claimed that he was doing well in school, family, health, sport and in his life as well. But I knew that he was lying to me and because I could not have access to his file, so as to check his background and support this assertion. I had to look ways of extracted information from him.
I had to press by asking question on various domains. Eventually, when he opened up I realized that juvenile have many problems and also lack essential things in their lives. One of the strong points I noted in the life of the juvenile was his academic excellence. According to him, he believes that because he is very good at his academic, all was well. However, I made him realize that life is broad ranged and should be observed in wholesomeness. The juvenile was authentic when he acknowledged the need in his life. I also noted that he still needs to change because suggestive gestures that he was making during our conversation. I suppose he would have opened up more to someone of the same gender. I felt the gesture were a little too for me given that I was a woman. Conclusion
Through the session, I was able to establish the fact the juveniles lack reality check in their lives despite lacking essential things.
I felt that the session was a step into helping the juvenile. However, I was bit nervous in the session because of the juvenile’s gesture. I would suggest that these juvenile should be given a briefing about the mentoring session, especially if the students are coming in. Another thing in training make the students to the role play with the trainers from HCJPD, student can be a mentor and trainer as a juvenile because they know the juvenile psychology. This role play will help the students to be more prepared about the session. Over all this assignment helped me to understand about victim blaming. We always blame the perpetrated not the situation he or she got caught up into bad. And instead of blaming these juvenile needs help, structure and organization in their lives so that they can be out of the prison
system.
