After diving deeper into the production of Metamorphoses I couldn’t help but recognize a theme of, “The Powers of Love”. The objective of the performance was to present the transitions and effects that love has on people, by staging different myths and stories. By enabling different design element and implementing special effects, the production of Metamorphoses created a visual world in which the play could unfold.
The set design was simple throughout the entire play, yet it delivered a meaningful theme to the performance. Consisting of a raised platform, fabric for acrobatics and the pool, the actors used each element of the set design to enhance the overall experience for the show goers. The best example of the performers using the set to its full potential was in the sailor myth. In the story a captain and husband, leaves his wife for a voyage at see. His wife fears for the mans survival but the captain presses on, ignoring her warnings. During his time at sea, a terrible storm engulfs the captain’s ship. The performers effectively use the set elements by splashing the captain with water from the pool- depicting a nasty storm. True to the wife’s belief, her husband does in fact die, but not their love for one another. The powers of love allow the man and woman to communicate one last time, permitting them to once more show their affection for each other. Other effective uses of the set design were when actors spoke from the raised platform (portraying wisdom and knowledge-like that of a god), and when one of the performs used the acrobatic strands to elevate herself and add new visual effects to the show.
Like set design, costume use was also simple yet effective. The beginning of the show started with the actors coming out draped in thin, white fabric. This fabric choice meant to show a level of purity (nude, almost nude) that was obtained by ancient Greek gods and successfully portrayed a specific style from a historical period. Other
