Metaphors are a figure of speech in which a word or phrase is applied to an object or action to which it is not literally applicable. They also can be defined as a thing regarded as representative or symbolic of something else, especially something abstract. The job of the old man was to catch fish, where the job for the boy is to go on learning on what life stands for. The man struggled to do the one thing he set out for, to catch the marlin. Although he struggled for many days, he finally accomplished his goal. The young boy struggles with learning new things and how to be grown. The fish represents the man’s life. He struggled to get hold of the fish as the man does with life. Although he finally got the fish, it just shows that at one point the man will understand life.
The sea is constant and always going. Meaning no matter what we do with our lives, new things will always come up to make struggles harder. The man didn’t have much than a small amount of poverty, the amount he had was just enough for him. He worked hard for what he had and wouldn’t let anyone take that from him. He was humble with what he had and even though people were flabbergasted by his acts, he did not boast. In conclusion, metaphors are used to show a visualization of what is told.
