Now this is clearly referring to the unfair treatment of the gay community by the United States. It's showing the United States symbol of freedom trying to take down a symbol which puts pride in the gay community. Of course this was done before the Supreme Court began in acting laws which benefited the gay community. That's not the main point of this scene though, the main point is that the United States is a giant hypocrite. It’s silently posing the question of how can the United States be the land of freedom when some of its citizens don’t even have basic human rights.
Overall the advertisement does an excellent job of catching people attention to sell its newspaper; however, it does an even better job of selling knowledge. The advertisement clearly shows that the more you read the news you'll be able to understand this picture for what it is. Meaning the more knowledge you have the more you're able to understand something and not be left wondering why there's a gas pump connected to a flower.
