Mexican American Fortification Essay
The fortification testifies to the military power that the Spaniards developed to defend the city from pirates and fortune seekers from other lands.
It was designed by Antonio de Arevalo and its construction began in 1657. Hernán Castro, who works for the Public Improvement Society as coordinator of the castle's educational area, explains that it took 63 years to erect it and that it was considered "one of the works of most important military engineering constructed by Spain in all America ".
The fortification was built by African slaves. The Spaniards had Cartagena as the most important port in the Caribbean and needed to shield it from their enemies because of the wealth that was kept in the city.
In San Felipe, located above the hill of San Lázaro, there

The tunnels also served to the Spanish troops to move from one place to another of the castle in the middle of an attack, without exposing themselves to be victims of an enemy gun. Dozens of legends have been woven on these underground passes.
There are those who say that one leads to the hill of La Popa; others, which leads to the fort of Bocachica, far away, on the island of Tierrabomba. It has even spread the story that the castle is connected to the cathedral, in the historic center. The truth is that the tunnel - the master gallery, it is called -, whose complete route can not be made because of the humidity in the deepest parts, ends outside the castle, where the parking lots are, and was an escape route.
Another military advantage offered by the fortification -explains Castro- is that it has all its walls slightly inclined to avoid that the enemy guns hit it with all its forcefulness. Those who visit it can still see the batteries where the cannons and the troops hospital were located. Most visitors arrive in the morning, although the site is open until the evening

So they had to create a system where when the security guard was furthest away, he would tug on a thirty-foot piece of rope to signal to the man it was clear to come out of the tunnel. At one point, there was an air raid and the lights in the tunnel went out, the ‘Tunnel Kings’, Danny and Willie, the men who were in charge of creating the tunnel were traveling through. Danny was surprisingly claustrophobic and held up the tunnel momentarily during the best time to sneak out-during the dark. It was going smoothly until one man fell on his package he was taking with him. The guards heard him and the tunnel was shut down.…

“Shaking off from my spirit what must have been a dream, I scanned more narrowly the real aspect of the building. Its principal feature seemed to be that of an excessive antiquity. The discoloration of ages had been great. Minute fungi overspread the whole exterior, hanging in a fine tangled web-work from the eaves. Yet all this was apart from any extraordinary dilapidation. No portion of the masonry had fallen; and there appeared to be a wild inconsistency between its still perfect adaptation of parts, and the crumbling condition of the individual stones. In this there was much that reminded me of the specious totality of old wood-work which has rotted for long years in some neglected vault, with no disturbance from the breath of the external air. Beyond this indication of extensive decay, however, the fabric gave little token of instability. Perhaps the eye of a scrutinizing observer might have discovered a barely perceptible fissure, which, extending from the roof of the building in front, made its way down the wall in a zigzag direction, until it became lost in the sullen waters of the tarn.” (pp.5)…

4:05! And we were explicitly told to be on time; hopefully the class will not leave without me. I arrive to Main Campus and don’t see a classmate in sight. Do you in fact not have a field trip today? Ahhh…let me run to COACB to try not to miss too much class. On my way there, I run into my Professor Aridiana. That’s interesting…its 4:11 and my professor is not in class. Clearly there was some miscommunication in Spanish Art. By the time we were able to coordinate with out entire class where to meet and where we were going, it was 4:30 and we only had an hour to walk to and see the Sagrada Familia. Fortunately, I had already seen the Gaudi’s historic Roman Catholic Church twice as it is arguably Barcelona’s most notable tourist destination. I do always enjoy our class field trips though, gives us an opportunity to spend time with our classmates outside COACB. I must say however, that as the cover page for all of Barcelona’s guidebooks, it is kind of disappointing and anti-climactic. The outside of the building is phenomenal with its intricate and ornate architecture. The 18 spindle shaped towers grace the Barcelona skyline and stand out for miles. Upon entering the actual cathedral, it resembles more of a construction site than the last great sanctuary to Christendom. I understand that this was Gaudi’s last and most important architectural masterpiece, and the reason worked stopped on the church was because of the Spanish Civil War of 1936. Simply put, I think that the excessive amount of scaffolding and workmen don’t do the impressive church the justice it deserves. I look forward to returning to Barcelona in 2050 and seeing the finished…

The Leaning Tower of Pisa is a freestanding bell tower located at the Cathedral Square in Pisa, Italy. It was built in three different stages over 177 year period. There has been controversy about the real identity of the architect for many years. Construction on the first floor began in August of 1173. Five years later, while building the third floor, the building began to sink. The infamous tilt is due to a thin foundation and unstable ground underneath. Construction was halted for nearly 100 years due to battles with nearby cities. In 1272, Giovanni di Simone resumed construction and had one side built with taller walls in order to straighten the building up. At first, it did straighten the tower, but then it began to lean in the opposite direction. Construction was stopped once again due to battles in 1284. The seventh and final floor was added 35 years later. The bell-chamber was finally added in 1372. It was built by Tommaso di Andrea Pisano, who succeeded in adding pieces of Gothic element to the Romanesque style of the tower.…

When we are in the fort Santiago, the weather is so cloudy and it seems that the rain is coming anytime. The road is wet and slippery that time because of the rain. I can’t distinguish if it will be going to rain or the sun is going to shine because there was the sun but it is raining a little. We are only the visitor that time because it is too early in the morning. I am very amazed to that place because you will see the oldness of the place. The guards are suited with the old fashion clothing and I’ve really appreciate that. They are very friendly and they are willing to have a picture with us. The cannons are really attractive to my view because I am interested with guns and other things related to it. There are also stores of paintings and it is really beautiful. I saw the golden footsteps of Jose Rizal before he was shot to death. We counted it and there are 490 footsteps. His foot is large as mine but his footsteps have small distance to each…

a guide warned us that we would have to climb 937 steps to reach the top of the ancient tower. At first we started counting the steps ourselves, but we soon lost patience. We occasionally passed small windows cut into the wall. As these gave little light, we felt as if we were going round and roung a dark tunnel. It was good to get out into the fresh air at last. from the top there was an excellent view of the grounds of the castle and of the surrounding countryside. In the distance, we could just see the remains of an ancient wall, beyond this, we saw a park in which deer wrer wandering freely. Immediately below us, there was a big ditch with a bridge across it. The bridge was full of people not enemy soldiers but peaceful tourists like ourselves who had come to visit the castle and its famous tower.…
