“…Gates opened and closed. We continued to march between the barbed wire. At every step, white signs with black skulls looked down on us. The inscription: WARNING! DANGER OF DEATH.”…
Patrick’s old Cathedral I immediately noticed how beautiful the building looked from the outside. The building is in great condition and it looks like it was just built a few years ago and when I did research on it I was very surprised when I found out that it is over 200 years old. When I went inside the church, I was amazed by the beauty of the church from the inside too. I first saw the huge altar in the front of the church and the amazing bright colors on the stained glass window above the altar. My eyes were also drawn right to the tall statues that are sitting around the back of the altar. The tall pillars inside the church running from the entrance towards the altar were also beautiful and makes the church look great. I was amazed that the church looks so beautiful even though it is so old and I am also very surprised that the architects who built were able to build it even though they didn’t have the technology that we have…
Upon approach, the fort looks simplistic as it overlooks the sea. A square building that could be anything from a fort, to an armory, to a storage center. The closer and closer you get, the more you realize its great size, and the intimidation factor sets in. Upon entrance, all the hidden secrets and true power of the fort is revealed. The square courtyard is surrounded by solid, windowless, concrete walls that tower 20 feet over you. Cannons line every side up top, ready to be wheeled into action against attacking forces. A small dome shaped tube is placed in a corner for a watchman to look out over the ocean, ready to spot anyone looking to intrude.…
As I ran, I heard my footsteps echo through the streets. I had no idea where I was going, only that I needed to get far, far, far away from the castle. I remember his last-minute parting words- barely a whisper- “I will give you a one day head start, and then I will find you.” I remember the echo as I bolted down the stairs, running as fast as I could.…
We continue along a green bridlepath above the limestone terraces of Barf Side Scar. Looking towards the head of the dale there are excellent views of Great Shunner Fell and Muker. As we descend to Gunnerside, we have a bird’s eye view of the field barns and walls in Gunnerside Bottoms. This patchwork of enclosures dates from the sixteenth…
The wooden sign has seen many moons, weathered down and carved into by the many travelers that visit the park annually. Soon after passing the sign, the terrain becomes slightly elevated. Your feet slowly tread through the coffee-brown dirt. The natural light from the heartwarming sun fades as the woods engulfs your body, forcing you to travel the cold, treacherous, one-way uphill hike. The setting now has an eerie tone due to the thick mist like atmosphere. Your lower body carrying your weight slowly becomes numb as your energy fades from the physically demanding voyage. When all was lost, dark mustard-yellow leaves release the smell of petrichor, revitalizing the soul as you attempt progress uphill. The light you once saw gradually becomes more prevalent. Your body screams for the warmth of the beloved sunlight, as you reach the…
After hoping the fence to get to the trail to begin the ridged hike, birds chirped and you could occasionally hear a branch break deep in the woods. Walking up the narrow hill through the deep forest was my favorite thing in the world. I felt free and had no worry in the world. And the view at the top of the mountain was even better. The beginning of the hike for probably a mile is a very calm and nice walk, but it starts to incline more and more from their. The trail opens up to huge clear cuts. through one of the clear cuts is a perfect view of Enumclaw. as you pass the clear cuts the trail begins to narrow again. The trail begins to become very steep and lesser of a trail. Cutting through harsh terrain for s short time that led to the last…
“Shaking off from my spirit what must have been a dream, I scanned more narrowly the real aspect of the building. Its principal feature seemed to be that of an excessive antiquity. The discoloration of ages had been great. Minute fungi overspread the whole exterior, hanging in a fine tangled web-work from the eaves. Yet all this was apart from any extraordinary dilapidation. No portion of the masonry had fallen; and there appeared to be a wild inconsistency between its still perfect adaptation of parts, and the crumbling condition of the individual stones. In this there was much that reminded me of the specious totality of old wood-work which has rotted for long years in some neglected vault, with no disturbance from the breath of the external air. Beyond this indication of extensive decay, however, the fabric gave little token of instability. Perhaps the eye of a scrutinizing observer might have discovered a barely perceptible fissure, which, extending from the roof of the building in front, made its way down the wall in a zigzag direction, until it became lost in the sullen waters of the tarn.” (pp.5)…
Another military advantage offered by the fortification -explains Castro- is that it has all its walls slightly inclined to avoid that the enemy guns hit it with all its forcefulness. Those who visit it can still see the batteries where the cannons and the troops hospital were located. Most visitors arrive in the morning, although the site is open until the evening…
Frist have you ever been to Devils Tower? This summer my family and I went to Devils Tower. When we made it to Devils Tower, we looked up and saw Devils Tower and people were climbing Devils Tower, one person fell down but there safety gear saved them. My brother, Dad and I climbed the edges of Devils Tower while we were climbing, I could smell the sweet scent of pine trees. My brother and I we kept slipping and I fell (slip) and felt the burn on my leg. When we arrived to the highest point we, could I could hear the sounds of nature as I saw trees and the landscape for miles. Devils Tower has a walk you can go on but not thro Devils Tower also there is a bigger walk you can go on which is a couple miles. The pine…
As I’m walking on the side walk looking at this calm and peaceful neighborhood I’m falling in love with all the beautiful trees and the serenity of the environment. As I come closer to the Menil I notice how tall it is for a one story building. It’s a simple building but the treasures inside awaits my curious eyes and soul of the arts. I notice the brass inlays and the unique designs upon the green lawn, I so wished there was water to fill it to get another prospective on the art but I continue on my way in.…
Little lights shine their way down the rugged winding path. Foot steps trudge in front and behind staying close together. Dodging thorns and burs left and right. Ouch!—Every time. Quiet laughs fill the silence as we continue on. Our trek ascends us up a treacherous slope and through a cow pasture carpeted with mines and under a barbed wire fence and down a mile long tractor path that feels like an eternity all with our bags and rifles being persuaded down by gravity. Finally, we make it to where we part ways. Goodbyes and good lucks are exchanged while nerves set in. My father and brother confidently head to their temporary homes in the far distance while I stay idle in the darkness with only a little light as my protection. Taking a deep breath, I too, head to my makeshift home hidden among the trees except mine is a…
What am I doing? Grigs thought as he made his way through the cold and gloomy castle. There had been a fog for the past three days that had sunk its way into the ancient stones and had permeated the hallways. Grigs walked through the halls on his way to what he believed was going to be his death. His heart was racing and despite the cold, found that his hands were sticky with sweat, making the torch he was holding slippery. Normally a guard would be leading him down this deep into the castle proper, but a gold piece had made the guard decide that Grigs was an excellent navigator and could do the journey on his own.…
