Statistics clearly show that the cost of education in the United States is on the rise in recent years than any other time in history. The purpose of our research is to figure out the various ways of acquiring a textbook for the University of Cincinnati students. We want to help students minimize the cost of textbooks by helping them compare different options. We also want to find out what are the different options of selling the book afterwards. Our goal is to help students stay cost efficient but also find out convenient and easy methods of attaining the book as well as getting rid of it afterwards. From focus group discussion and interviews, so far, we have found out that the majority of students prefers to buy them online and used, and prefers to resell them afterwards as opposed to renting or other alternatives. We plan to execute more research studies, such as an online survey, to find out more details about what more students prefer and help our classmates with making the right decision.…

I can only speak for myself and what I see, there is not that demand for books, when we are consumed with the easy way out by using technology. Not keeping in mind that when we are forced to read for pleasure it keeps our brains thinking and allows us to better articulate our words and most of all be creative. A prime example would be instead of purchasing this semesters text books with the total cost of 300.00 and opting out to use the EBook option where purchasing these text books cost about half of that, is more cost effective for the every day consumer/student.…

US News says, “The soaring cost of college textbooks is affecting students throughout the nation, to the point where some forgo purchasing books, despite the fact their grades could be in jeopardy”, and some students leave college altogether. Having to drop out of college, and potentially ruin your academic success, due to the cost of books, is incredibly unfortunate. The purpose of college is to teach every student the skills needed for them to start their career of choice. Why should the cost of a book hinder this universal goal? Not only are the cost of textbooks hurting student’s wallets, but also their grades and their academic choices. Nowadays professors do not teach directly out of the textbooks. Teachers mostly uses PowerPoints, handouts and notes to teach. College should pay for every student’s textbooks because most of the time students use the textbooks for only one semester unless she/he has to retake the class again. It is very rare that textbooks are used in class frequently. The scary aspect of the financial burden of college is that “today there are 29.1 million college dropouts versus 24.5 million Americans with less than a high school diploma. It’s safe to predict that this trend will only accelerate as older generations with lower educational attainment rates are gradually replaced by new…

One of the main reasons why college textbooks are so expensive is because they are overpriced. The publishers set the prices. The bookstore has no control. The publishers of the textbooks are in the habit of bringing new editions quite frequently. Most students hesitate to buy old editions fearing that they will miss out on something. In fact, many professors list a new edition in their book list every semester,( Experiencing Psychology textbook for example), purchased at the DCC bookstore for $112. The upside of that is that it’s a wonderful book, but the downside is that I don’t even use the book in class. Most textbooks are overpriced because they come in packages, which might include CD’s and supplementary materials which are really not required ( Ruszkie /How to Write Anything $121.48,DCC bookstore ); however, students are forced to give more money because of the extras. The majority of publishers do not do anything about the high cost of college textbooks. Why would they? Because college textbooks are one of the most profitable sectors for the publishing industry. A Government Accountability Office report found that in the past two decades, college textbook prices have increased at twice the rate of inflation. In academic year 2003-04, students and their families spent more than $6 billion on new and used textbooks.…

Reading "" by Jon Marcus talks about why are text books and college cost so expensive. How I feel about text books and college being expensive is not fair because after college people are in debt and you only used textbooks at least one semester. I don't agree that we should have software for textbooks because people like me like to write and feel the looseleaf paper textbooks. I understand the paper textbooks or hardback textbooks better then online it gives you more information. However, the online textbooks would be good to look up words we do not know or give us more in depth of the paragraph we are reading. Being in debt is not good especially when some people only go for 2-3 years and not finish but it is their fault for not finishing…

Our group has conducted valid research and all agree that the high price and ever-rising cost of textbooks in the state of New Mexico has become an issue. Luis Argon Castro, Catherine Ponce, Mathew Hagman, Saul Velez, and Hannes Harmon have conducted thorough research to bring this problem to the forefront of issues in New Mexico. We wish to open the public’s eyes to the knowledge and information produced by us on this matter. It feels as if commercial companies, publishers, and authors are taking advantage of students statewide in order to collect high profits, which happen to be increasing yearly. The prices have been substantially climbing every year since 1994 and have now surpassed the rise of inflation.…

The prices of everything are constantly rising due to inflation. Not too long ago, gas prices reached four dollars a gallon. The highest in history. With prices going up in nearly every category, the price of textbooks were affected and raised as well. It seems that publishing companies and authors are taking advantage of students, due to the fact that they have to buy textbooks, across the country just to make as much profit as they can. How much profit do they even make off of one textbook? Some textbooks required for class are over a hundred dollars to rent. Not even to buy and make your own, to rent and return after the semester. And that's if its not damaged in any way, which will cost you more. Some courses like math, only require one giant book. But,…

Moreover, E-books can affect the reading habits of people and actually get them to read more. Experts believe that some day all reading will be done on some form of computer screen (“E-books”). With the emergence of these E-books, there is more of a chance than ever that printed books will soon fade away (“E-books”). People feel that since e-books can just download the books for a small price, libraries do not even have to shelve the printed books (“E-books”). Experts also believe that there are so many advantages from the E-book that there is no reason to even own printed books (“E-books”). Supporters of the E-book believe that if libraries would upload all their books and materials on the internet, people would benefit more and would easily be able to access all the materials with the E-book (“E-books”).…
