In this paper, I will critique the speech ‘How to Buy Happiness’ by Michael Norton. This speech was delivered at TedxCambridge and was filmed in November of 2011. I gathered my information from the TedTalks series. This critique will focus on the organization of the speech, the content of the speech and lastly Mr. Norton’s delivery of the speech.
INTRODUCTION
I believe Mr. Norton started his speech a little apprehensively. He showed signs of nervousness by touching his chin repetitively. As the speech progressed and he became more comfortable, however, he livened up the audience by peppering anecdotes into his performance. This I believe gave him a good foundation with audience. During the speech, Mr. Norton 2
maintained eye contact, he incorporated natural hand gestures from time to time and had an effective charisma about him that made him convincing to the audience. He walked around the stage appropriately without being distracting. He also did not have to incorporate “filler” words into the speech which showed that he was able to manage his anxiety. He built his stories one on top of another in a smooth and understandable way. He used effective pauses and his pace was easily followed and flowed naturally. He concluded the speech with a challenge to the audience to “start yourself thinking less about ‘how can I spend money on myself?’ and more about ‘what can I do to benefit other people?’
CONCLUSION
I highly appreciated this speech. The whole concept of the speech was extremely alluring. His study of ‘How to Buy Happiness’ was engaging to not only the audience, but to myself as well.
He concluded the speech perfectly and ended on a memorable note. My only criticism of the entire speech would be to refrain from touching his chin at the beginning and start immediately with the attention getter, but overall it is a speech I would
