(Boonstra, 2010) After studies showed that many adolescents in the U.S.A, would like more education and knowledge on the subject, Michelle Obama set up the “Let Girls learn” programme. This initiative, set up in 2015, endeavours to teach young women about sexual education and to aid in the decrease of teenage pregnancies throughout America. Mrs Obama's hope is that more girls will get a proper education in schools and wish to go to college. It is an attempt to ensure that every girl around the world has access to education and the “resources” that they need to build a stable future for themselves. This includes having the information and the belief that they can get a third level education and have a career. The belief that a woman’s place is in the home is outdated and this initiative shows that Mrs Obama has a passion for empowering young women to believe that they can be anything they want to be, with the right education. In Michelle Obama’s speech “Remarks to the NAACP National Convention,” she laments that childhood obesity is a serious issue in America today, back when she was young children were always out playing and being active, nowadays children would rather sit inside and play video games then do anything else. Since most children are seldom most of the time and spend hours upon hours watching television “every extra hour of TV they watch is associated with the consumption of an additional 167 calories.” (423). Children aren’t just becoming lazier, they’re actually becoming more and more unhealthy as time goes on developing “diabetes and cancer, heart disease, asthma.” (420). In an effort to try and help fix childhood obesity Obama launched the “Let’s Move” campaign, which even features commercials on Disney Channel showing the Disney celebrities outside playing some kind of physical activity. The four main points to this campaign are; The first one consists of giving parents knowledge to give their children healthy food not fast food. The second point states that the government is attempting to replace fatty foods in schools with healthier options, regardless of how the children will feel about it. The third part of the campaign is just trying to show children that being active actually is fun, it doesn’t just have to be challenging. The final point Obamas’ campaign states is that all families no matter what their income is, wealthy or struggling, should have the ability to get fresh and healthy food without breaking the bank.…

Sex Education in public schools has always been a widely debated topic in American History. Determining what information to give out and how old the children need to be is constantly being argued. However, many programs are only preaching abstinence, especially to young women. Young men on the other hand get the “condom talk.” Very little information about female contraceptives, physical or medicinal, is ever discussed in these sex education sessions. Rebecca Walker, in 1995, wrote that young women must be treated as growing, learning, individuals, and need information concerning “sex and access to birth control and abortion” in order to nurture their self-esteem and protect them from violence.[1] With limited access to information, women are being denied the ability to make a fully cognitive decision about their bodies.…

The state of school lunches has been a point of debate for many since Michelle Obama’s Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act signed into law December of 2010, giving full authority to the USDA in setting the nutritional standards for all foods regularly sold in school lunch lines, stores, and vending machines. The law was set to provide additional funding to meet the updated standards, however, the cost was severely underestimated. Using data provided by Medicaid, eligibility for the free or reduced school lunch programs has seen a definite increase, although participation has not (Lee, 2010). In a press release, U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius was quoted saying “The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act is a significant step forward in our effort to help America's children thrive and grow to be healthy adults... By increasing the number of students eligible to enroll in school meal programs and improving the quality of food served, this legislation simultaneously tackles both hunger and the obesity levels currently affecting too many communities across this nation.” I would like to draw attention to her careful wording of “...step forward in our effort...” A subject as incredibly important as the nutrition of…
