CHAPTER I

Foreword to the Design
The Design of Point-to-Point Microwave Communications was created for the full understanding of the subject Wireless Communications. The students are expected to apply the lessons from their lecture and from their researches conducted for this study.
The researchers were asked to make a design of microwave link with a minimum of thirty kilometers distance between the transmitter and receiver. The sites chosen to be wirelessly connected are Timberland Sports and Nature Club in San Mateo, Rizal and the Marketing Office of Filinvest Land Inc., in Alabang, Muntinlupa. Timberland Sports and Nature Club (TSNC) belongs to the Filinvest Land Inc. (FLI). One of FLI’s main offices is located in Alabang which is approximately thirty kilometers away from TSNC in San Mateo. The designers were able to determine the distances, geographical coordinates, ground elevation, obstruction, climate and other factors that must be considered. More information was collected to build a more comprehensive document for the readers. Tables and graphs for the related data and computations are provided to make a clearer presentation.

Introduction to the Site
In every organization, transfer speed of information is very vital in the operation. If their information is fast, more work can be done and more objectives will be met. However, if data transmission is slow, less tasks can be accomplished and more time will be wasted.

In a company with different branches, distance will be a problem for data transmission. Without any direct connections, it will be very difficult to share information between branches.

    An antenna for a wireless sensor network for trains is designed and built. The network will monitor temperature and vibrations of the wheel bearings on the train wagons. Doing this will allow for an earlier detection of damaged wheels, which will ease planning of maintenance and reduce wear on the rails considerably. The requirement of the system is that it is to be installed without any cables attached to the sensor nodes. This calls for wireless communication, and that for that antennas are needed. A train is a difficult environment to transmit electromagnetic (EM) waves in. It is full of metal and EM-waves cannot pass through a conducting material. Having much metal in its vicinity also affects the function of the antenna. This needs to be taken into consideration when making the design. The constructed antenna is a small dual-layer patch antenna. Dual layer means that it is constructed out of two sheets known as substrates of isolating material with different characteristics. The lower one of these substrates is made in such a way that integration with a circuit board is possible. Such integration would reduce the production cost considerably. The antenna is designed for direct placement on a conducting surface. This surface could be part of the train. It uses the surrounding metal as a ground plane in order to reduce its size. (b) E- PLANE TEE : - It lies in the plane of electric field . It is voltage or series junction. In this signal is divided in to two parts having same magnitude but in opposite phase. (c) MAGIC TEE :- If another arm is added to either of the T-junction. Then a hybrid T-junction or magic tee is obtained. The arm three or four is connected to arm 1&2 but not to each other. (4) DIRECTION COUPLER :- The power delivered to a load or an antenna can be measured using sampling technique in which a known fraction of the power is measured so that the total may be calculated. A number of coupling units used for such purpose are known as directional coupler. (5) ATTENUATORS :- It consist of a resistive wane inside the wave guide to absorb microwave power according to its position w.r.t side wall of the wave guide.
