Breast Cancer
The term breast cancer can be deceiving because there is more than one type of breast cancer. The different types are related to the where the cancer starts in the breast. Breast cancers can be either carcinoma or adenocarcinoma. Inflammatory breast cancer is an invasive type of breast cancer and effects only 1% to3% of all breast cancers (ACS, 2017a). Paget’s disease prevalence is only 1% of all breast cancers and starts in the ducts, then spreads via the skin to the areola. Phyllodes tumor is a rare form of cancer develops in the connective tissue of the breasts, but develops in the ducts of glands. Angiosarcoma is type of cancer that occurs in the cells of the blood of lymph in the breast (ACS, 2017a). Monthly self-breast exams should be done to spot any lumps early in development (Breastcancer.org, 2017d). Yearly mammograms should start at age forty or earlier if a benign breast condition exists (Cancer.net, 2016a). High risk patients may want genetic testing to be done to check for specific cancer genes to minimize their risks. Tests to help in diagnosing the specific type of breast cancer may include: MRI of breasts, mammogram, or ultrasound. Other tests may be ordered to monitor for metastasis such as, PET scan, CT scan, lab work, and bone density scan. However, a biopsy of the site is definitive for diagnosis (Cancer.net,
