(A Discussion of Keats Messages)
We live life everyday unaware of what will become of us. We don't know when we will die, or how it will happen but we will find out in time. For instance, Keats was a young man who died of tuberculosis. Hansen has done plenty of research over Keats and has discovered that, “The slow, dad death in a foreign city was breaking Keats’s wonderful spirit.” This was because of the fact he couldn't be with the love of his life because he didn't want her to become a widow. Before he died however he wanted to write as many poems as possible because he wanted to be remembered for something. Obviously, someone who is dying will teach us many messages in his poems.
First of all, you have the message of living our own lives from the poem On First Looking into Chapman’s Homer. This is important because if we only did what others say or want then we will never be truly happy. For instance, if we stay in something we don't wanna be in to make someone else feel better then …show more content…
we will just hurt them more in the end. “Then felt I like some watchers in the sky.” (Line 9 from On First Looking into Chapman’s Homer) To me, this makes me feel like like he started to believe he wasn't good enough to help because he was thinking for himself. Dr. Elizabeth Lindsey is a doctor who thought of different themes in which people should live their lives, “These themes include honoring the self, seeking and connecting with others, celebrating life and acquiring a state of grace.”(Lindsey) This means that you must be okay with how you have lived your life to have a peaceful death. As well as wanting to be apart of someone's life to help them for the better.
Second, you have the message of fear of dying from the poem When I Have Fears That I May Cease to Be. “Before my pen has gleaned my teeming brain.” (Line 2 from When I Have Fears That I May Cease to Be) This is said because he is going to die before he is able to write everything he wants in his life. Since he wants to be a famous writer he fears that his time is up and he will never be one. Paul Wink did research on weather or not religion helped people fear death less, “We found no linear relations between religiousness and fear of death.” (Wink) This says that there is absolutely no relations between religion and fear of death. Some people believe that if you believe in God you won't be scared to die.
Third, there is the message of adventure from the poem Ode to a Nightingale. Adventure is important in everyday life because it helps us find out who we are. “Fade far away, dissolve, and quite forget” (Line 21 from Ode to a Nightingale) This to me says the farther away you go the better off you will be because you will have no more worries. Every fear you have will slowly begin to dissolve away. John Miles researched on whether or not going on field trips helped students learn the information better, “Adventure education seeks to promote individual growth and development” (Miles) This means that going on field trips allows students to grow individually and develop better. I believe this is true because it allows them to find things in different ways and to interpret them in a way they will remember.
Lastly, the message of art is from the poem Ode to a Grecian Urn.
Art is important because it is the only thing we have that rewrites history. Without art we would have no clue what our ancestors before us have done. “ O Attic shape! Fair attitude! With brede” (Line 41 from Ode to a Grecian Urn) This to me shows that he was admiring the urn and trying to figure out its story. Sometimes when looking at art you have to decipher the story within it. Angela Eckhoff discusses why it is important that we have art and how it helps with educational purpose, “ This research provides support for integrating rich, meaningful art viewing experiences as a regular part of young children's arts experiences.” (Eckhoff) To me this means that art helps a child view the world differently and allows them to use their imagination to express their feelings. Expressing their ,index can tell you if a child is depressed or being bullied which is very important in today's
world.
Obviously, someone who is dying will teach us many messages in his poems. Keats may not believe it back then if he was told that in 2017 kids would be reading his poems because he was a phenomenal writer. Keats was important in the fact that he died so young but still accomplished so much. We should all try to strive to be as successful as Keats and not freak out so bad when it comes down to it. Clearly, Keats wasn't very confident in his work even though it is more relatable than all the other poems we have read.
