SUBJECT: Command Philosophy

1. PURPOSE: To provide my command philosophy under which I will operate

2. As I take command of this great unit, my first unit as a Platoon Leader, I feel very proud and lucky. As your new platoon leader, there are many things I will need to learn and see during my tenure.

“Mission First, People Always”: In order for the mission to be accomplished, I need your 110% at all tasks at hands. Every soldier in this platoon from PL all the way down to private will do the upmost to ensure that our mission is accomplished. I expect every soldier to work at the level of his or her duty and rank and always strive to complete the mission. When it comes to people, it is of my utmost priority to take care of you all as soldiers and provide you with proper guidance and support in any way possible. In addition, I see your families as part of this family therefore; it will be my priority to foster family participation when permissible. Respect. Insubordination will not be tolerated. I will never ask of my soldiers what I will not do myself. If it is not illegal, immoral or unethical you are obliged to follow orders no matter the situation. Treat others, as you would like to be treated and always respect the rank and position of those above you as well as your fellow soldiers. Be flexible and be mindful. If a problem occurs and a soldier is not comfortable with their direct CoC, I have an open door policy. Nonetheless, the proper CoC should be used at all times.

i. In addition, discrimination of any kind will not be tolerated and if it is reported or seen/heard by me, appropriate action will be taken. Discrimination includes prejudices against gender, religion, creed, sexual orientation, ethnicity, and race. Sexual harassment/assault will be dealt with severely under UCMJ. I expect all soldiers to be culturally sensitive and respect others’

    Leadership is an art, not a science. Therefore, we as senior leaders must professionally develop our junior soldiers through experience, counseling and mentoring. We must mentor our soldiers to be ethical standard bearers and to live up to and enforce Army valves. 1. The following statements represent my Leadership Philosophy that we must ensure as Non-Commissioned Officers and leaders of soldiers that we are working as one team to produce the best trained soldiers in the Army. a. Proficient caring leaders: I expect proficient Leaders to demonstrate caring attitudes toward the soldiers in their charge. We must lead from the front and set the example at all times. Caring for soldiers is the foundation of the Army. The most precious asset we have is each other and above all our soldiers in the organization must truly know we care for them and their families. b. Teamwork: As leaders we must work as a team in every aspect of training. Soldiers need to cooperate with each other and become one. A well-disciplined caring team will build cohesiveness, which is a bond that no force can break. Soldiers will not play the Officer against the NCO if they truly understand you are one. I will personally be involved in individual training and will insist we are trained. c. Communication: Along with teamwork, communication is what soldiers normally see as a command failure. Soldiers must be able to use the chain of command and chain of support, both formal and informal. I expect every soldier to utilize communication to its fullest extent. As soon as a leader gives directives to soldiers, I expect the details to be worked out and soldiers to receive the information rapidly. d. Leadership: This is in no way a zero defects business.     Yes I do believe that the military will be excepting of a culture changes. The culture of the military is forever going to be changing. Accountability is important and should not be taken lightly… A soldier lost his life a couple weeks ago, due to lack of accountability, and it hurt a lot of people.     Insubordination is defined as when someone refuses to obey an order given by a person who has more authority than them.     Accountability in the army is important because soldiers as well as equipment, ammunition, food, water and other various supplies are vital to the operation and proper function of the army as a whole. To start with, soldiers must be accounted for because they are the responsibility of their team leader, squad leader, platoon sergeant, and so on. If you don't have accountability of soldiers then when you attempt to conduct a mission you may not have all the soldiers you should have and that could cost you not only failing your mission but your life and the lives of the soldiers with you. Another thing that is very important to keep accountability on is equipment. Accountability of ammunition is important as well, if you are on a mission and not all of your soldiers have ammunition then it could cost the mission and lives. Keeping accountability of your soldiers, your soldiers equipment status, and ammunition status are very important to completing a mission successfully without any problems. Also keeping track of soldiers equipment as well as ammunition can help save the army funds to put to better use to help soldiers with retirement, their benefits, various programs and classes.
