Develop early an Aging-in-Place Family Caregiving Plan and seek buy-in from other family members. Also, don't lose site your parent's stubbornness may hinder the planning process.
2. Hold Frequent Family Meetings: Start formulating, as mentioned above, an Aging-in-Place Family Caregiving Plan. Engage All Family Members but know not all will be Helpful: Starting early engaging family members to take part in the planning process will cut down on some of the family contentions. Parcel out responsibilities to various family members by critical core area components. Assign specific core area components to investigate by assessing and assigning duties to each family member.
4. Hold Your Criticism and Avoid Assumptions: Family meetings and personal discussions with family members will be necessary when sensitive issues are brought to the table. "Be Positive and Stay Positive" is the motto to embrace. Keep in mind some issues will depend on timing. Sometimes it may be necessary to temporarily hold back issues from the group. Acknowledge the issues. Don't avoid the issues but table discussion to a later date. Some family members may not be at an emotional state, place and time to handle the gravity of the situation.
5. Show Disgruntle Siblings/Relatives the Inner Circle: Certain siblings who are interested in promoting their own self interest are looking for a payday. Getting their inheritance is more important to some siblings than doing the right thing - helping in the caring of a parent.
