Minorities face many obstacles outside of the classroom that connect with the decreased college graduation rates. One of the major factors in question is related to monetary value. Many minorities come from families that are not as well established in the United States. They are the first or second generation to be living in a new country, therefore not having the resources usually developed over generations of time. These underdeveloped monetary resources play a big role in the success and failure of minority students. It is not unusual for first time college students to work while pursuing an education in order to support themselves and their family (Bers & Schetz, 2014). There is a study conducted that compared eligibility for the school lunch programs and early college success. Eligibility for school lunch programs was used to denote a low-income status.
