Misconceptions of Motocross
Do you enjoy the outdoors? If you like Camping, being outside all day, being around loud vehicles, playing football, bean bags, ladder ball and riding bicycles around dirt tracks; then you’ll enjoy watching motocross races. There’s never a dull moment of boredom when you’ve got the outdoors and the sun shining while there’s nonstop live entertainment. Waking up the first morning of races is my favorite part of the weekend. I’m curled up sleeping soundly in bed as I hear the first few bikes start up. Once a few of them start to warm their bikes up, a majority of the racers are revving their engines and the smoke is flying through the campers like dense fog. I step outside the camper and everyone’s getting their trailers opened up, organizing them and setting their bikes on the stands as they get done warming them up. The main worry is the bikes and whether or not they’re in tip top shape and ready to ride. The men usually check the bikes out and fiddle with a few things until they approve of the sound as they idle. Then basically we chill out and wait until we’re staging. This is the part when you start getting a little nervous and anxious to get up to the gate and give it all you got. The feeling you get when you’re at the gate is unbelievable and only something you’ll experience if you get a chance to race. After lunch my brother usually races, so we are running around like chickens with our heads cut off, trying to get things ready for him. He starts by putting his knee braces on and then slipping his long Fox racing socks over them. Then he puts his pants, jersey, and boots on and his neck protector, which stabilizes his head. Next he puts his racing vest on, which protects from the bike landing on him. Lastly, before walking up to the line, he puts his gloves and helmet on. Buckling the helmet is still difficult for him with all his gear on, so I help him buckle it and we’re on our way. My dad and I walk him up there, my dad pushing the bike and Isaac,

My twin brother Alex is leading the pack. He turns around gesturing the race is on, but he quickly flies out of sight around a bend. I lift my left heel then my right heel almost immediately after to turn right. The edges of the board slice through the snow propelling me forward as I cut deeper into the snow. Using the reverse of this skilled technique I veer into a hard left turn. Carving right and…

“I got this! I got this! Just calm down and take position. You have prepared yourself for this race all morning.” “Just take your position and breathe.” “Why is my heart pounding like this?” “Inhale and exhale.” This is normal for UWA freshman Sarah McMillion on race day. The second reason that I think John should wait for the race is due to insufficient information provided in the case. In addition to the chart that was provided by Tom (exhibit 1), there should also be a chart showing the distribution on head gasket success is related to temperature since the race might begin in a day with fairly low temperature. Thus, if I were John, I would have to determine to…

It has been dark for the past hour and the crowds have started to gather around the bends of the course. The weather was complete shit, cold northern winds and a cloud filling sky - it was going to rain or snow - but that didn't stop the people from trying to get the best spot. None of the ‘noteworthy’ races were set to start for another two hours but most of these people didn’t care; they just wanted to see a race not caring if it was the captain or some want-to-be hotshot. But at the rate that the clouds were coming in the races would probably be postponed not that the racers couldn't handle a little rain -that’s not true. When you have an environment like the Coal Trailers, liability comes into play and they risk nothing, it’s better safe than…

I can say it has been over a year since I did my last amateur cross country race, between moving, family/work responsibilities and a self admitted laziness in actually getting my ass to a race early Sunday mornings when I could be sleeping in, I do, in fact miss this part of my cycling experience, therefore I am hoping to join in on the weekend racing festivities next spring when the local mountain bike series starts up again. Even though I have not done much racing lately, I have been doing plenty of riding and having a blast exploring all the sweet trails in my small part of the world. While writing this article on racing I was reminded of all the excitement, nervousness and unplanned chaos that comes hand in hand with weekend racing and…

Two years ago, on a cold Saturday morning, I prepared for my first ever track tryout. I took a shower, put on my clothes, and got into the car. On my way to practice, I felt strong physically, but I also had an undefined, jittery feeling about how the day was going to go.…

It was the happiest and at the same time it was one of the scariest moments of my life. When I was up on the gate for my first gate drop ever I was absolutely terrified, because when that gate dropped we would all be taking off to one small turn and the fear of crashing was racing through my mind. Racing motocross is definitely one of the most dangerous thrill seeking sports out there and I’m madly in love it. I raced at local tracks for about a year and a half and I actually did really well. I won quite a few races and was loving every second of it then the day came and I turned sixteen and I was finally old enough to race on the national level all over the east…

It was an extremely hot, sunny day in late April, and it was the last track meet of the season. everyone wanted to do their best. In past track meets, I had not mastered the full sprinting form, but as the season progressed, I became a much better runner. I thought that this was my opportunity to show everyone how much I had improved. Even though my shin splints made it feel like my legs would explode, I was determined to ignore all the pain and just keep running. Each sprinter on the field was sweating and exhausted and the required layer of clothes over our track uniform was not helping.…

I was born in Scottsdale, Arizona on March 15th, 1999. I lived in Arizona until I was five years old. My brother Ben is two years older than me which is the perfect age difference to create competition between us. When Ben found something new to do, I had to do it too. It didn’t matter that I just turned three years old, I had to ride my bike without training wheels because Ben just did. Now I can’t remember exactly what I thought watching him do this, but I can assume I wanted to be like him. So when my dad was done helping Ben, I asked to have my training wheels taken off so that I could give it a try. Reluctantly, my dad did and when we got to the top of the hill he gave me a push to start and I ended up losing control and crashing into a cactus. Even with that initial bad experience of riding without training wheels, I still wanted to be like my brother. This admiration quickly had me riding a loop around my house daily so as to improve my skills.…
