Misconceptions Of Smith, Segal, And Robinson
Smith, Segal, and Robinson explain in the section “Understanding and Preventing Suicide” that there are misconceptions about suicidal people. One common misconception is that “ Anyone who tries to kill him/herself must be crazy.” (Smith, Segal, and Robinson). Smith, Segal and Robinson state that individuals who are suicidal are not mentally ill, but suffer from depression or feel extreme emotional distress. Another misconception is that “Talking about suicide might give someone the idea.”(Smith, Segal, and Robinson). Instead of giving someone ideas about suicide when you talk to him or her Smith, Segal, and Robinson believe you actually show them that someone cares, so bringing it up for discussion can be relieving for the person. According to the section “Warning signs of suicide”(Smith, Segal, Robinson) a sign we often do not take seriously is when people start “Talking about suicide”(Smith, Segal, Robinson). This is an obvious indication that they are unhappy, but if you are like me I never think they could possibly be serious. Another warning sign that they point out that we could mistake for something good is a “ Sudden sense of calm”(Smith, Segal, Robinson). This could mean that the person was depressed for a very long time and feels peace knowing that they are going to commit suicide (Smith, Segal, Robinson). A warning sign that could be mistaken for normal rebellious teenage behavior is “Self-destructive behavior”(Smith, Segal, Robinson). If a person starts participating in activities that could cause them harm in the future and do not seem to care than they might feel a lack of self worth and could be contemplating suicide. According to Tyler Charles’ article “What were not talking about is killing us” in RELEVANT magazine we need to always look for signs that we may be suicidal and not be afraid to seek help. He thinks that it is important to know when you, yourself might need help. There are many things that could indicate someone is suicidal, but if we look for the warning signs in others and ourselves we can know when to get or give

Many people believe that when an ill person says that they’re depressed, all the sick person is doing is trying to get attention. Many people say that sick people reach out for help just for the attention. People don’t believe that depression is a real illness; they think that the people that claim to have the illness are just attention-seekers. While they may be wanting attention, a depressed person reaching out is also a cry for help. They obviously know something is not right, so they say something. It’s not for attention, it is to get help. Many depressed people are scared of themselves. They are scared about the harm that they can cause and they reach out for help before they can hurt themselves. Untreated depression is the number one risk for suicide among youth. They try to reach out but are made fun of and are called “fakers” and are said to be seeking attention, when all they really want is help.…

Untreated depression and other mental disorders are a key component to teen suicides. Depression, especially, can be triggered by several events in a teenager’s life such as problems at home, breaking up with a boyfriend or girlfriend, and dealing with sexual identity (Will). Maureen Underwood, a social worker who has written suicide prevention school curricula and who works with the Society for the Prevention of Teen Suicide, states these “triggering events could push someone off the edge” (Harpaz). Unlike adults, who have the capacity and skills to overcome such obstacles, teenagers have not reached the level to do so. According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, at least 90 percent of people who kill themselves have a diagnosable and treatable psychiatric illness (“AFSP: Risk Factors”). Therefore, the awareness of student’s actions and emotions by parents, teachers, and other adults are imperative.…

Major factors that account for suicide ideation include psychiatric distress, major depression, poor physical health, and poor social support. In an experimental study done by P.J. Raue et al, participants from a large certified home health agency were randomly selected and assessed for psychiatric symptoms. The study used a Structured Clinical Interview for Axis I DSM-IV Disorders and the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression. They were asked questions regarding suicidal plans and thoughts, reasons for living, and the capacity to carry out suicidal actions. Of the participants, 11.7% showed signs of suicidal ideation with 2 patients requiring emergency care. Some reports indicated that these patients were thinking of suicide via overdose and firearms. The participants with suicidal ideation met the criteria of major or minor depression. Around 25% of participants with suicidal ideation did not show any signs of mood, anxiety, alcohol, or substance abuse disorder. A one year follow up interview assessed whether these patients still exhibited signs of suicidal ideation. About 5% of the whole sample with no suicidal tendencies at the first interview now showed signs of suicidal ideation. Among those who reported suicidal ideation in the beginning of the study, 35% continued to report symptoms of suicidal ideation. Although the rates of suicidal ideation are relatively low and no one committed suicide over…

The author claims that mental disorders have a huge influence on suicidal behaviors. He cites an article of The National Institute of Mental Health, and states that 90 percent of all suicide completers demonstrated some type of diagnosible mental disorder. Though, his explanation for suicide cases is not limited to the association between mental disorders and suicide rates. Scott Anderson also highlights the impulsive urge behind the suicidal behaviors. He establishes that many people get a sudden urge to kill themselves, and the availability of resources at that specific moment either encourages or discourages them. In other words, when someone wants to die, “how” they can suicide is a more important question than “why” they would prefer death over living. His uses “British Coal-gas Story” example to…

To account for differences among suicidal ideation, a sample size of 1,000 participants would be beneficial. Since it is difficult to discover individuals who experience suicidal thoughts, I will promote it to university students as an interpersonal relationship study. To gain more diversity and age, I would promote it to hospitals and mental institutions. It would help determine mental well-being, as well as physical health, as a factor on suicide rate.…
