Missmanaged Layoffs Week 2
1) What is the problem presented in the article?
The problem presented in article 1 is the lack of proper and well-managed policy around employee lay-offs.

2) What do you think the problem is?
The problem appears to be lack of knowledge, experience, and training of HR and managers that are required to handle such dismissals.

3) What are the possible solutions to the problem?
Solutions an organization could implement would be HR training (role playing, scenarios, etc.), written policy and procedures, and third party present rule. All of these would provide an opportunity for both HR and managers to be confident and compassionate in the scenario shall they must perform such task as well as written policy and procedures provided to employee during initial hiring and annually review of policy would provide expectations and knowledge of dismissal types and possible outcomes .

Layoffs create uncertainty in the workforce causing loss of productivity in remaining the remaining workforce. The article addresses that a manager's approach is paramount; we don't disagree with this sentiment, but I don't see it as a large of an issue as the author of the article. If a company is at a point where they are laying off employees, all other options should have been exhausted. The author writes the article from the position that managers don't know how manage and that layoff are ineffective. I agree layoffs are not useful, but an amount of…

I researched and familiarised myself with the Employment Policies, Procedures & Guidance Handbook, which contains the Capability & Disciplinary Procedures. The Capability & Disciplinary Procedures are the means by which rules are observed and standards of conduct and performance at work are maintained, they provide fair and consistent methods of dealing with problems of conduct or work performance. Neither the disciplinary or capability procedure are designed to be punitive management tools but are intended to encourage and facilitate improvement at an early stage to ensure that conduct and performance do not become a problem that is unmanageable. The procedures allow for fair and consistent treatment of an employee and hopefully they will achieve a positive outcome to any problems.…

All businesses at one time or another will have to deal with employee layoffs due to a re-organization or changes in the economy. Employee layoffs can have a damaging impact to the remaining employee and management staff. There are several solutions that can be done to alleviate the negative impact and the recommendation is to provide managers with the proper training on how to properly handle a layoff so there is a more positive impact on the remaining staff. Proper training prepares managers for delivering the message to both the employee being laid off and the remaining staff. This type of training has many advantages for the company and the employees.…
