MLK tells the story of the good Samaritan. A man who was beat pretty badly and was close to death. People passes by and did not lend a helping hand. The good Samaritan came along and saved this certain man. The good Samaritan showed he possessed the quality of altruism. Altruism means “regard for, and devotion to, the interest of others” (MLK, pg. 22-23) This situation is difficult for today’s generation’s civilians because of the societies tendency to be greedy. The people that passed the dying man probably thought about helping this certain man but then put their own interests first and decided against helping. I believe MLK is stressing that we need to find that inner strength to love your neighbor more than you love yourself. I coach baseball in Red Bluff for young adults and I make a substantially small amount of money doing so. The kids just have an interest in being better baseball players and playing the game. My interest is of making good money. I set my interests aside so I can devote my efforts in helping these kids achieve their interests. I know this is not exactly what he is stressing but I believe it is on the right path. With love as the topic and already covering that we should love our neighbors, we should also love our enemies. Chapter 6 “A Knock at Midnight”, is al about faith. He uses the term midnight which refers to the darkest hour. In this hour it is hardest to keep our faith. It is always the darkest before the dawn. We need to keep our faith because morning always follows. If you have faith in God then you will be alright. Faith in God will give you the strength to overcome your problems. I believe MLK in Chapter 9 is saying how we need to keep faith in our hopes and dreams. I believe he is saying to love our hopes and dreams and strive to make it happen even though the chances are not in our favor.
