Credibility statement: I picked this topic because Mobile, Al is my home town and is the city I’ve spent most of my life in. C. Thesis statement: Mobiles rich history and diverse culture makes it a very interesting city to learn about, and a fun place to live. D. Preview of main points: I will be discussing mobiles rich history, African American history in mobile and mobile today. II. Body A. Main point#1: mobiles history
1. Mobile Alabama is one of the oldest cities in the United States. 2. Founded in 1702 as Fort Louis de la Mobile, the city was ruled by the French in (1702-1762). After the French, the English ruled from (1763-1780), and then the Spanish ruled until 1814 when it became a U.S. possession. 3. Mobile is known as the city of six flags having flown under the French, Spanish, British, Republic of Alabama, Confederacy, and the USA flags.
Transition/Signpost: Now that I’ve told you a little about mobiles history let me tell you about some African American history in mobile.
B. Main point#2: African American history in mobile.
1. In 1860, the Clotilde, the last known ship to arrive in the Americas with a cargo of slaves, was abandoned by its captain near Mobile. Many of the slaves escaped and founded their own community on the banks of the Mobile River, which became known as Africa
town. 2. Mobile had been more tolerant and racially accommodating than many other Southern cities, with the police force and Spring Hill University becoming integrated in the 1950s and the voluntary desegregation of buses and lunch counters by 1963. This all happened before the civil rights act laws passed in1964. 3. In 1981, Ku Klux Klan members lynched Michael Donald on Herndon Avenue. The perpetrators of the lynching were both convicted of murder, with one receiving life in prison and the other being executed in 1997. A wrongful death lawsuit was filed by the Southern Poverty Law Center on behalf of Michael Donald 's mother against the United Klan’s of America. The seven million dollar decision against the Klan’s returned in favor of Donald’s mother, by an all-white jury, and put the Ku Klux Klan out of business in Alabama.
Transition/Signpost: Now that I’ve told you about some of mobiles African American history, let me tell you about mobile today.
C. Main Point#3: Mobile Today
1. The third largest city in the state of Alabama, Mobile is currently home to almost 200,000 people. Mobile is the largest municipality to be found between New Orleans, Louisiana and Saint Petersburg, Florida along the Gulf Coast.
2. Added to Mobile 's skyline in 2007, the RSA Battle House Tower is the tallest skyscraper in the state.
3. Mobile serves as Alabama’s only port. Today it ranks ninth as largest port in the United States.
4. Mobile is home to the original Mardi Gras in this country, started in 1703, years before New Orleans adopted the celebration.
III. Conclusion A. In closing I have basically given some insight to the history and some general facts about Mobile, Alabama. B. Mobiles rich history and diverse culture makes it a very interesting city to learn about, and a fun place to live. C. Today I told you about Mobiles rich history, African American history in Mobile and Mobile today. D.
