This process consists of a pathogen, susceptible host, reservoir, portal of exit (from the reservoir), mode of transmission, and portal of entry (to the susceptible host). Some of these infections include VRE, and MRSA, C.difficile, shigella; major wound infections; herpes simplex; scabies; varicella zoster (disseminated); respiratory syncytial virus in infants, young children or immunocompromised adults. Contact precautions may vary from agency to agency, but they typically involve a private room or cohort patients. They also require every individual going in to the room to wear a gown and gloves.

Three contact precautions that would be beneficial for the improvement of Mrs. Boviers infection are hand hygiene, gloves, and a gown. Hand hygiene is the most important step in preventing an infection from spreading. It helps protect Mrs. Bovier, the nurse, and all individuals the nurse comes in contact with. Gloves help protect the nurse from coming in contact with the infection, as well as, protecting Mrs. Bovier from other bacteria that could be on the nurse’s hands. The last contact precaution would be a gown. This helps protect the nurses’ scrubs from any bodily fluids that could potentially come in contact with them. It is important that gowns are worn and taken off at the door of the patient’s room, to ensure that the infection will
