IRIS Module 3: Behavior and Classroom Management
Jevelle Britton
Iris Module 1
1/28/2015

1. List three reasons why some students still cause problems even when there is a good classroom management plan in place?
a) Their experiencing some temporary stressors in their life (ex: divorce)
b) Their considered “at-risk” (ex: high poverty background)
c) They have certain disabilities (ex: emotional or behavioral disabilities)

2. Discuss at least one benefit and one challenge of intervening early in the acting-out cycle to prevent problem behaviors from escalating.
a) It’s much easier to deal with a child when they are only showing simple signs of agitation that it is to manage a child who’s already acting out. This also allows the teacher to intervene much earlier, when it’s easier to get behavior back on track.
b) On the other hand, a trigger may go unnoticed and waiting too long may increase the behavior and escalate it towards more severe forms of behavior.

3. Think back to the Challenge at the beginning of this module. Ms. Rollison is having trouble with Patrick, who is a model student on some days and on others is rude and disruptive and refuses to work. Unfortunately, she probably does not have enough information to figure out what Patrick’s triggers are. Name three methods by which Ms. Rollison could determine his triggers.
a) Observation and identifying patterns
b) Asking, in a non-judgmental way, Patrick about his actions. For example, “I noticed you are having problems with…[XYZ]”
c) Contacting his parents to possible find out what his triggers are

4. Ms. Rollison is also having trouble with Tameka, who refuses to do any written work. In this case, you do have enough information to figure out what Tameka’s trigger is. What is it?
a) It seems like Tameka may be struggling with written assignments, and so that may be a trigger for her. She may be embarrassed about her writing skill or may have had a bad experience with it in past academic situations.

5. Once either Patrick or Tameka enters the Agitation

In conclusion, the two interventions mentioned, the check in & check out and the school wide positive behavioral interventional support method. Has proven to help decrease behavioral problems in school settings. With the use of reinforcing material, that they can earn, encourage the student to want to behave better. When both interventions were compared from baseline behavior to the end of the intervention, the behavior decreased. In particular, I agreed and saw a lot of interesting points in Todd et al. (2008) paper. I Liked and agreed with the hierarchy value of points. Meaning, that they can spend their points quickly or accumulate the points for a higher prize. Which helps the children to learn about patients and to value the…

The article opens with a case study on a seventh grader named Jason. Jason is considered low achieving and performs below grade level. Mr. Monroe does not want to bore the high achieving students during class but also does not want to leave anyone behind. One day he is using the smartboard to explain simplifying fractions. Because they consider this a waste of time, the high achieving students talk amongst themselves and distract the students that are paying attention as the low achieving students complain about the complexity of the material. Mr. Monroe warns them to stop talking and to pay attention but this only makes the situation worse. Jason states aloud that all teachers suck. After being threatened with an office referral Jason says that he would rather be there than in the classroom. This is a classic example of nonviolent misbehavior. The article outlines three key elements to remember when dealing with classroom misconduct: behavior is predictable, behavior is preventable, and preventing problem behavior requires attention to instruction.…

When children can emotionally establish a good relationship with their peers at a young age, they show good signs of age appropriate mental health. When an infant can laugh and crawl over to other class mates this shows developmentally appropriate emotions and actions. From a young age children need to learn how to establish good mental health from their caregiver. As teachers we are also obligated to watch and make sure the children are not doing things that would be consider in appropriate behavior that may be signs of negative mental health. As a teacher if we observe a child wanting to fight with other children, or not being able to understand certain consequences when it comes to action he/she has made. This would be a good time to get the family involved this will give us the opportunity to see what home life may be like. If we can find out what is going on in the home then it will give us a better understanding as to why this child may be acting out.…

Results were cross-checked against a Google search using the search terms of Australian tertiary institution. Each program description located, was then examined to determine whether the program was a four-year undergraduate degree program. Where institutions had more than one program that could prepare their graduates to teach primary aged students (e.g. combined early childhood and primary), such programs were included only if no specific primary program was provided by that…
