Throughout my life, I experienced many events that would make most people unable to function socially, emotionally, or academically. These events include two divorces, five house relocations, and a transfer to a new high school during senior year. I consistently failed assignments and could not stay focused during class as my . Most teenagers would have given up here as the disappointment from both their parents and teachers would have destroyed their hopes for a successful future. However, this anguish became a catalyst for what would become a significant restructuring in both my demeanor towards schoolwork and my perspective on the future. Against all odds I was able to bounce back from the discouragement I had faced. I believe that this…
The state of Petristan in the Indian subcontinent spreads across the watershed of Paratha River system to the west and Korma River in the East. The early civilization of the Paratha Valley has been acknowledged as one of the past glories of southern Asia ranging from 2700 to 1700 B.C. Today, recent findings have suggested that this civilization was profoundly influential on the formation of the Petristan state. Therefore, the Petristan State Archaeological Survey has investigated 5000 sherds derived from eighteen probably states which were selected by random sampling techniques. Fifteen sites that are thought be single-period villages and three urban sites, Garam Masala, Tiltandula and Phul-Gobi, were carefully looked at. In order to derive a chronological order of these assemblages, the relative dating method of seriation has been implemented. Through this, the initial development of Petristan through the influence of Paratha Valley can be understood to a further extent.…
Tragedy struck a small west Texas town Saturday when beloved Lubbock Christian School (LCU) superintendent, Peter Dahlstrom, accidentally shot and killed his nine year old granddaughter, Soren, while rabbit hunting on the family farm. The entire community has been shocked by this tragedy and the effects of the incident will be felt in the community for some time. Many people in the community will benefit from crisis intervention techniques during this time. I have applied Robinson’s Crisis Response Model for successful crisis intervention to develop a plan of action to help teachers, students, and faculty through this difficult time. The model suggests the following six steps: 1) Define the problem; 2) Ensure safety, including assessing potential for self-harm; 3) Provide support; 4) Examine alternatives; 5) Make a plan; and 6) Obtain a commitment, including a no-harm agreement where applicable.…
Today I had a session with Melinda Sordino, a high school freshman dealing with depression. She talked about the difficulties she was having, including losing her best friend, Rachel Bruin, and recently losing her friend, Heather. Rachel stopped being friends with her after Melinda had called the police at an end of the summer party, but not for the reasons many would expect. She expressed her feelings sadness towards Rachel and how she felt like she couldn’t tell anyone about what really happened at the party.…
According to Shoshana Hoose and Kay Lazar in “More Than Our Share”, Maines suicide rate in the past decade have climbed at a terrible cost to family and friends because Maine’s young people are killing themselves at a rate far above the nationals average. The average suicides for youngsters ages 15 to 19 in nearly 20 percent higher than the nationals average, and for people ages 20 to 24 is 31 percent higher. Also, the national average rate of kids 10 to 14 has more than doubled since the mid-1980’s. Suicide has a heavy toll on families and friends of one who commits suicide. It can cause years of anguish for family members and friends, who often blame themselves for not doing something--anything--to prevent the…
Each year, thousands of lives are lost to the most preventable cause of death: suicide. The alarming rise in rates of suicide in young adults prompts an investigation into the root of the problem. Society’s reluctance to discuss suicide and mental illness plays a large role in the public being notoriously unaware of the pervasiveness of suicide in young people. In her essay, “Suicide on Campus and the Pressure of Perfection,” Julie Scelfo, a frequent contributor to The New York Times, analyzes the demanding lifestyles of college students and the stress factors on their lives. Scelfo strives to educate parents and students on the influences of parental control and the importance of mental health in young adults. She asserts this claim by implementing…
This also coincides with my previous training as a peer educator for Saint Peter’s University Counseling and Psychological Services department in which I assisted with assessing the mental health and wellness needs of students on campus, and served as liaison between students and the…
I first made the decision to return to school a few months ago because it would benefit my family in the long run, as I intend to return to work when my two infants start kindergarten. Three months after beginning classes, a news report came out about a local two-year-old little boy named Colton, who was missing. There were very graphic photos that circulated over Facebook that documented the abuse the baby was being subjected to. As a mother of a two-year-old little girl and an eight-month-old little boy, it was weeks before I could look at my own children without crying or thinking about Colton. I was faced with putting the facts of the case aside and focusing on my children. As a mother, this was very difficult to do.…
Loss of identity is one of the main reasons of suicide. The loss of identity can be directly connected to residential schools. The first aspect of residential schools is the attack on the Aboriginal language. Aboriginal children who were forced to attend these school were not permitted to speak in their native tongue and would be severely punished for breaking this rule. For example in some cases “Needles inserted into tongues for speaking native language”(Indian Residential Schools Education Resources, 15). This punishment caused many children to neglect their native tongue, leading to loss of identity, and therefore suicide.…
Journal Entry #1 Most of my high school experience has not been pleasant. I have struggled with depression and anxiety, as well as physical health problems since the end of sixth grade. My attitude and attendance in school have been inconsistent up until the end of last year; my second junior year. Up until that moment, I thought that school was a complete waste of time, and that the only thing our education system was meant to do was condition people to give up their individualism and turn them into mindless sheeple. However, over the summer I began to realize that having a negative attitude towards my life and everything around me was only going to hinder me.…
As one that enjoys helping others, I have to constantly remind myself change can be stressful and many times fear of the unknown can make us second guess our decisions. However, I know everything I have endured in the last couple of years will make me a better school counselor and it all will be worth it. I believe every child should have an opportunity to receive an education and if we want the world to change, we must help others succeed and receive an education. Becoming a school counselor is a life dream of mine. As an undergrad student, I completed my course work in elementary education because in the State I was living in it required you to have two years of classroom instruction in order to be a school counselor. At that time I was unable to do my student teaching because of family obligations and took my degree in another program. Now that my children are older and decisions I make in life are more about what makes me happy, I’m determined to get my degree in school counseling. Not only do I look forward to working with children and helping them with their concerns, I’m also looking forward the work days as well as the vacation days. In order to assist others we as school counselors must also take care of our well-being to, something I don’t get a chance to do that often working in social services. I look forward collaborating with everyone, learning new theories and processes to making…

In a time of need, friends and family play an important role in both the physical and mental stages of recovering from one of these heartbreaking misfortunes. Eventually, students and teachers must resume where they left off. This is most likely the hardest part of the recovery process. Equally important, schools should take more thorough precaution to prevent said acts from occurring. Of all places, students should not have to feel afraid in a school. Schools are one of the few places in which are dedicated towards bettering ourselves, and that right should not be stripped from us due to a few monstrous individuals with the desire for heinous crimes. In spite of this, people learn how to move on, sometimes without a loved one and with mournful memories of the awful…

My unique educational environment of a school has allowed me the opportunity to form close relationships with teachers and students alike, enabling me to interact with people of various backgrounds and ages. These experiences prepared me for my encounters beyond the realm of the classroom. Within this environment, I planned my class' junior and senior trips. These experiences provided me with an opportunity to represent my classmates while fostering communication between the faculty and students. Currently, I participate in a class called . Twice a week, and I get together to read, review his homework, talk about current events, and share our life experiences. While this seemed intimidating at first, I learned that he depended on me to help with his work. No longer was I just helping out', but I had a responsibility to to assist with his learning and be a positive role model in his life. With these recent school experiences, I have learned how communication and compassion can instill responsibility and be a person's most valuable allies.…
