While Toni Morrison was growing up she has also experienced prejudices similar to Twyla. Toni Morrison’s family moved to Ohio to get away from the dangers and economic struggles of the south (Kubitschek 5). As Toni Morrison grew up, she wondered what it meant to be black. She has said that when someone was born black they had to “decide to be black” (3). What Morrison said goes beyond skin color and refers to what the world views (3). This gives insight on why Morrison decided to write this short story. Both women Twyla and Roberta have preconceived views of each other based on world views. Once they build an emotional relationship with each other, they forget what the world has always told them about each other.…

Being rather young, he did not really know what was happening, but he could tell it was bad. Later, this affected the early parts of his life, and became a long lasting nightmare. Toni Morrison’s Recitatif is a story of two young, racially separated girls that grow up in an orphanage together. Because the girls were young when they first met, they knew they were different from each other and they knew their moms wouldn’t approve but they didn’t let it affect their friendship. They became the best of friends and began to make a lot of memories at a very young age, most of them highly affected by their emotions. When it came time for the two to move on from the orphanage, also known as St. Bonny’s, they vowed to write everyday and stay in contact. This story seems to be all about race but the author never tells us which girl is white or black. Morrison gives little hints but never a straight answer to the big question.…
