The data supported the hypothesis that if Daphnia are placed in differently concentrated solutions of barium and calcium chloride, then the highest concentration of calcium chloride would affect them the most because of the production of hydrochloric acid and calcium oxide from the mixing of water and calcium chloride, two very dangerous acids, with the highest concentration having the biggest chemical reaction. Within five minutes of putting the Daphnia into the 10 (ppt) solution of calcium chloride, one or more of the Daphnia died. The Daphnia in the 1 (ppt) solution of calcium chloride died before the Daphnia in the 1 (ppt) solution of barium chloride, and same with the .1 (ppt) solutions. Daphnia are freshwater organisms, so when they were exposed to saltwater, the pressure difference between their body fluids and the saltwater surrounding them forces the fluids out of them, resulting in…
From the 0-12 ppm of dissolved oxygen the number of fish observed increased. From the point 13-14 ppm the number of fish decreased, but then increased from 15-18 ppm of dissolved oxygen.…
The objective of this lab was to figure out which has a higher cell respiration rate between crayfish and elodea. In order to figure this out we first set up three beakers to represent our control, elodea and crayfish and filled them with 75mL of culture solution which were dechlorinated making the solution acidic. We then had to place both the elodea and the crayfish in separate beakers filled with 25mL of water. The increase in volume of the water would represent the volume of the two test subjects. We then covered each beaker with plastic, but for the elodea we placed it under a can so it could be in the dark. After waiting 15 minutes to allow them to respire we took it out and add four drops of phenolphthalein, which was also acidic, to both beakers. Once both beakers got their four drops we added drops of NaOH, which was a base, until the solution turned pink. Our results were that the respiration rate of the crayfish was higher than the elodea.…
The purpose of this experiment is to design and conduct a basic scientific experiment, identify and control variables. Some other objectives that we learned is to write a formal hypothesis, identify the basic and integrated process skills of science that were used in this experiment. Also, we will learned the effects of temperature on goldfish respiration. This experiment will be conducted with four students , one goldfish, thermometer, a stop watch, and a beaker. Our results showed that the fish temperature increased and the fish breathing slowed down.…
Type of fish we used: The type of aquatic fauna we used for our eco-column was a gold fish. Gold fish are primarily used to provide food for other aquatic fish or animals such as turtles. The pros and the cons behind Gold Fish are since they are farmed massive quantities, their health isn’t the best. They are put at higher risks of getting disease or transferring diseases. They are also known to consume a high quantities of oxygen which they then produce high amounts of ammonia.…
(2, p.g 1). Adult Artemia are a well-used food source for domestic fish and are frequently used in laboratory research. The use of Artemia in scientific experiments is common practice due to the species’ adaptability, “such as adaptability to wide ranges of salinity (5-250gL¯¹) and temperature (6-35 °C), short life cycle, high adaptability to adverse environmental conditions, high fecundity, bisexual/parthenogenetic reproduction strategy (with nauplii or cysts production), small body size and adaptability to varied nutrient resources” (3, p.g. 453). The Artemia used in the investigation were in the nauplius stage of their life…
The more ml of NaCl we add in a water sample, the results were increases in conductivity level and salinity level. From results of our experiments, a standard curve was created to graphically show the relation between salinity and conductivity. The 45degree line from our graph proved that there is a positive relation between salinity and conductivity. Conductivity and salinity have a strong relation. As conductivity is relatively easier to calculate, it is used in the calculation of salinity and both affect aquatic and quality life. An increase or decrease in conductivity indicates pollution. Additional dissolved solids will have a negative impact on water quality thus oysters will not growth as expected. Based on the results I don't recommend the rehabilitation of oysters because on a higher scale, it would be extremely difficult to maintain a salinity level of 10ppt to 12ptt with all the risk of pollution, humans activities, and temperature issues. It would be even more difficult to growth oysters in an area where salinity is between 10ppt to 27ppt because of the protozoan. Lucky, MSX is not transmittable from oysters to oysters, which should have increased their rate of death, but it still dangerous for the growth of oysters. A future experiment should focus on if oysters can filtrate particulates from the water. If oysters are able to filtrate, it means they would be…
Adult fish were kept in individual tanks with sponge filters, at 28.5oC, under a 14 hour light and 10 hour dark cycle, and…
While observing the information in table 4, it appears that the number of fish changes from time to time and the oxygen increases and / or decreases when this occurs.…
First, the lecturer mentions that there is no dead sea otter body on the beach, that means the sea otter gets killed and eaten by a predator, not because of pollution , ON the other hand, the reading points out that the main reason is pollution, also, some experts test the water and find a high levels of chemicals that affect the sea otter.…
The Daphnia magna, more commonly known as water flea, is indigenous to ponds and lakes in northern and western North America. This crustacean has an outer transparent covering called the carapace. The unique physiology of the water flea is useful in translational research allowing researchers to visibly study all of the bodily systems without causing harm to the specimen (2). Being classified as an indicator species, the Daphnia magna are extremely sensitive to changes to their marine environment, sometimes showing biological symptoms in response to toxicity exposure. (1). In this experiment, three Daphnia magna were treated with three different drugs to measure the change in their short-term cardiac function; ethanol, caffeine and nicotine. Ethanol, found in drinking alcohol is a…
A recent study found that when noxious substances were applied to the lips of trout, the fishes' heart rate increased, and they took longer to resume feeding. These fish also showed unusual behavior after being harmed, including rocking from side to side while balanced on their pectoral fins, and rubbing…
Prelab Assignment Before coming to lab read carefully the following pages on the scientific method and then answer the prelab questions at the end of this lab handout. Be prepared to discuss and/or hand in your responses to the prelab questions at the start of lab. Introduction Biology is a dynamic field of study whose aim is to unravel the mysteries of life itself. Throughout history, humans have been curious about the world around them. Through the millennia people have observed the natural world and have asked, “why?” Those that have advanced our biological knowledge the most, whether the great scientists of the centuries before us,…
The purpose of our lab was to begin to understand the rates of succession. Succession is a number of persons or things following one another in order or sequence. Considering that all living things follow some sort of order, Joey Collins, Brian Carman, Chris Broadwater, Marisa Grondin, and I attempted to figure the succession rates of two different forests. In order to do this we used the forest behind the elementary school and the forest behind the track, by the pond. One of my hypotheses was that the maple tree would be the most dominant tree in both forests especially in forest A, the elementary school. My reasoning for this was because I know how many maple trees I see in the forest by my house, and other forests around me. I…
A fish has long been seen as the perfect “starter pet”. Parents who are skeptical of their children’s ability to care for a larger animal will often present their offspring with a goldfish before introducing a dog or a cat to the household. While it is true that goldfish do not require quite as much attention as their four-legged counterparts, marine pets are not as easy to raise as everybody seems to think. If a fish is to thrive and survive in your care, you must make sure the water in your aquarium is the right temperature, is free of chlorine, and has a low pH level. Failure to adequately prepare the water for your fish will ultimately lead to their death, likely after several weeks of illness and lethargy. Experienced aquarists may be…
