While at sea Sanger Rainsford accompanied by another big game hunter named Whitney who is Mr. Rainsford’s Intern. Variance soon breaks in one of their conversations
when Rainsford doubts that an animal is unable to sense fear or reason. Whitney soon drops her quarrel as she returns to her cabin for some rest. Rainsford decides to stay on deck and examine the Island off in the distance of a dark moonlit sea, puffing on his pipe falling asleep, Rainsford wakes up to familiar sounds. “Somewhere off in the blackness, someone had fired a gun three times.”1 causing him to spring up and look at the distant Island fading away, climbing on to the rails of the ship to get a better look at the island and Losing his balance he falls off the rails and into the sea, now fighting for his life to keep afloat he calms down and swims his way to the island. Finally making it to land, exhausted he begins to languish upon the shore of the shore. While on the Island, Rainsford tracks down some nearby foot prints and bullet shells, finding a mansion. Approaching the door Rainsford knocks as a 7ft tall man with a beard, and a gun, answers the door, this man is introduced as General Zaroff’s Chamberlin. Named Ivan who is also a Cossack Russian, A giant with a long beard, along with general Zaroff. At first glance general Zaroff seemed to be quite the polished man. Well educated, highly Eloquent, “He was a tall man past middle-age, for his hair was a vivid white, but his thick eyebrows and pointed military mustache were black as the night from which Rainsford had come. His eyes, too, were black and vary bright. He had high cheek bones, a sharp-cut nose, a spare, dark face, the face of a man used to giving orders, the face of an aristocrat.”2 Later in the story plot we learn that General Zaroff is not the well-mannered man he perceives himself to be, but instead he is a mad murder, who has a fear of losing the only thing he’s ever been good at and that’s the hunt! What did he do to stop this from coming to reality? To hunt the most dangerous game. Human. The following day Rainsford struggles to get Zaroff off of his trail until the third day when Rainsford tricks Zaroffs hunting hounds, by killing Ivan with a Burmese tiger pit earlier that day and jumping off of a ledge into a sea when Zaroff returns that night with more Hounds. With the mansion unguarded Rainsford broke into the Generals house to wait for him to return. Upon return the general is caught unprepared and terminated. In conclusion, Richard Connell did and amazing job in presenting the conflict of hunter becomes the hunted. I feel this book is mandatory to read because I teaches a simple lesion in a way that is a bit unconventional and creative method. The characters seemed to come to live inside the readers head with smooth context and language as well as a fitting setting. A book that anyone can enjoy at any age.
