Mother and Staff Member

Airport

My vision was blurry. I heard thousands of voices overlapping each other, people rushing around carrying their luggage, bumping into one another. In order not to get trampled by the crowd, my mom and i hurried to the counter.
‘She’s an unaccompanied minor’ my mother explained to the staff behind the counter. They took a while to arrange the documents, and gave us a slight nod.
‘A staff member will bring her to the lounge, you don’t have to worry.’ she said, giving us a warm smile. I hugged my mother for the last time and followed the staff member through security.
There was nothing I could do, i was alone now: me, myself and i. The lounge provided me with snacks and drinks. However, the silence that hung in the room brought a sense of loneliness in me.
It was time for boarding. I followed a group of minors to the gate and waited. The waiting felt like hours, just sitting there just watching, observing: Mothers carrying their babies, comforting them when they had the urge to cry; Fathers holding shopping bags on one hand, passports and boarding passes on the other; Children sitting together, happily playing their card games.

Flight

It was around four hours before the flight attendant dimmed the lights. The people scurried across the aisle, getting ready for ‘bed’. I laid there staring at the ceiling, wondering what will happen after i arrive and the responsibilities i had to take on, everything was going too fast.
The seat was hard , i rolled and rolled trying to find a comfortable position to sleep in. My legs stretched too far front that i had to bend my knees, and each time i opened my eyes, i could only see emptiness in front of me, darkness surrounding me.
Dinner was served. I ate pasta with shrimp, it tasted awful. The shrimp was bland whilst the pasta was dry. I wished for my fathers delicious beef noodles, there was always a fragrance of freshly brewed beef soup, a flavor that was infused into the noodles.

My heart sank to my stomach, as I hated to fly on planes. I couldn’t even fathom the thought that I was stuck on this plane forever. I rubbed my hand along the smooth armrest and gripped the end as tightly as I could, hoping this was all a dream. Unfortunately, it was not.…

“Passengers flying Flight QF563, your gate is now open for boarding”, I peacefully sipped what remained of my coffee and waited for Joshua to finish his bacon and egg roll. Shortly after, we began to make our way to our designated gate. The smell of low-priced takeout food filled the air and couldn’t help, but leave me feeling overly excited. My son and I navigated our way through the clustered crowds of other keen travellers, following the signs above our heads as well as the announcements that were played through the speakers at the airport.…

I woke up tired on a beautiful, sunny, Tuesday morning. It was the day I had to fly to San Francisco for my job on a cruise ship. I had been in between cruises, so I had taken the chance to come see my parents in Newark, New Jersey. Later I realized that it could have cost me dearly. I changed into my pressed, white, long sleeved shirt with khaki pants and my sailors hat that I had to wear for my job as a deckhand. I arrive at Newark Liberty International Airport a hour before my flight, where I hug my parents goodbye. I walk in and go through security easily and go to my gate and wait for thirty minutes until we would be able to board.…

Jonas immersed himself in the memory. Suddenly, he was sitting down next to a small window. He looked out and upon seeing the clouds he realized he was flying. Below, he could see a long strip of tree tops, skyscrapers, bridges and tiny moving dots. He noticed that all the people around him were sitting orderly, in rows. There was blue carpeting on the floor and white paneling on the ceiling. He was in what seemed like a long and narrow tunnel. “I must be in a plane, Jonas thought.” He had never been inside a plane before, but he had seen some flying over the community. Suddenly, a large thump resonated followed by multiple noises and explosions. People were startled and confused, murmuring to each other.…

The air flew past our heads, and screams echo through the air. The sun is beating down relentlessly, people’s cheeks are tinted red, partly from screaming, partly from the sun burns that are beginning to take form. Individuals of every age are jammed close together. You can hear them begging for an end to their terror, and other are embracing the adrenaline, breaking out in hysterical, maniacal laughter. Lights flash in front of our faces, blinding us. At this point, my feet are dangling, and I am gripping onto the seat, a huge smile adorns my face. We are hurled into the air, spinning in large circles. The air smells like soft baked pretzels and cotton candy, mixed with the stink of sweat and sunscreen. Even whipping through the air, there is no missing the sound of vendors luring in little kids, or the buzzing when someone wins a prize a hundred feet below our…
