MADD was created in 1980 by Candice Lightner, this non-profit organization was started so it could bring awareness and educate the public on the dangers and results of driving drunk. The problem that led Candice to start this organization was the death of her 13 year old daughter,
Cari was struck an milled by a drunk driver while she was walking in the bike lane with a friend. The driver that killed Cari had been convicted of drinking and driving four times before this incident. Candice used her tragedy top bring awareness about drink driving and the lack of consequences implemented when caught driving drunk. this problem is considered a social problem becuase it potentially affects everyone and most of society is unaware of the seriousness of the problem ( Patric & Goldbus 2013)
Polices created as a result of MADDs influence includes the National Minimum Drinking Age Act, in 1987 the federal law was upheld in every state, this law raised the legal age to purchase and posses alcohol to those 21 years old and over.
In conclusion, MADD is an organization brought together by Candice and others who wanted to make a stand against tragedies associated with alcohol and managed to make a huge diffrences and brought forth some great policies. Overall, MADDs mission is to: stop drunk driving, support the victims of these violent crimes and prevent underage drinking (MADD 1980)
