‘UP’ tells the life story of Carl Fredricksen. Carl was a fan of Charles F. Muntz, who piloted his own self-made the Spirit of Adventure. One day, Carl enters a house curiously and meets Ellie, who also a fellow fan of Charles F. Muntz. They become close friends. Ellie shows Carl her secret Adventure Book. She also tells Carl of her plans to go to Paradise Falls. Years later, Carl and Ellie get married and they begin rebuilding the old house, making it their home. They go through many stages of their life together and dream of going to Paradise Falls in South America. However, they become incapable of making the trip due to their general life expenses and Ellie 's aging. Ellie dies peacefully and Carl lives as a lonely, elderly widower afterwards. After the death of his wife Ellie, Carl has shut off the world around him.
Carl is now 78-years old and grumpy. He has become withdrawn and lonely due to losing his wife. He also carries a cane as he is unable to walk normally. He performs many arbitrary tasks to get through the day, but he is socially isolated and avoids human interaction. Carl 's house now sits on a large construction site.
