There are several ways an induvial can show their leadership abilities. The movie Remember the Titans (2000) is a great example that describe leadership and teamwork in various ways. Remember the Titans (2000) is a true story of a newly appointed African American football coach and his high school team on their first season as a racially integrated school. This paper would analyze the leadership traits of three of the key characters I the movie Remember the Titans (2000). It would also provide examples of each key character’s leadership style, decision making and outcomes; and utilize a theoretical leadership foundation to discuss the effectiveness or ineffectiveness of each character.

Remember the Titans (2000) is about two high schools in Alexandria, Virginia that becomes integrated in the 1900’s. The school board force a predominantly white school and a predominantly black school to come together as one and form the first interracial high school and football team. The main conflict of this movie is racism. Throughout the many obstacles T.C. Williams high school football players and staff faced they still came together as one without the support from the city and win the state championship.
Main Characters One of the key characters is Coach Herman Boone, who was played by Denzel Washington.
Coach Boone was the black football coach that replaced the head coach when the two schools got integrated. Coach Boone was a transactional leader because he had the ability to make his players agree and respect him. If any of his players did not meet his standards he would punish them. According to Burns, a transactional leader motivates their followers by appealing to their self-interest and exchanging benefits (Yulk, 2012). Another key character is Coach Bill Yoast, who was played by Will Patton. Coach Yoast was the former head coach of the titans that got replace by Coach Boone, Coach Yoast is considered as a participative leader because he consider the opinion of all the players on the team. Participative leadership involves the use of various decision procedures that allow other people some influence over the leader’s decision (Yulk, 2012). Lastly, Gerry Bertier is another key character in the movie, who was played by Ryan Hurst. Gerry was the captain of the team and was very determine to have is way. Gerry is considered as a autocratic leader because he shows high levels of power over his team members. An autocratic leader has the ability to take control over all decisions and accept little input from group members (Yulk,
2012).
Analysis of Character’s Leadership
This section of the paper would analyze each of the key character’s leadership style. This section would also discuss several examples of incidents involving the character leadership ability, decisions they made and the outcome of each decision, it was also explain if their leadership style was effective or non-effective.
Coach Herman Boone is consider a transactional leader in the movie. He have the ability to get people to follow his lead. One incident that showed Coach Boone leadership ability was when he made the players set on the bus based of their place on the field offensive line or defensive line regardless of race. His reasoning for this was to bring the team together without race playing a role. The outcome to his decision was that several players gain a close relationship with members on the team of the opposite race. Another incident was when Coach Boone force the players to learn a few things about each other. His decision for this was to bring team together as one and get to know the likes and dislikes of the person despite what was going on in the world outside of football. The outcome for his decision was the players refuse to learn about each other he made them train three times a day until they decided to cooperate with is request. The last incident in the movie that Coach Boone exercise his leadership ability was when he took the team to the Gettysburg battle ground on their last day of camp. His reasoning was to show his players that countless of lives were lost because blacks and whites refused to unite as one. The outcome to this incident took a while but the players soon realized that the game of football does not see race. Coach Boone leadership style was effective because he got the players to see each other as people and teammates regardless of race at the end.
Coach Bill Yoast is considered as a participative leader in the movie. He has the ability to involve everyone in the decision making process. One incident is when Coach Yoast was offered several head coaching jobs in Virginia. Instead of taking one of those jobs, he decided to accept Coach Boone offer as an assistant coach for the titans. His reason for staying was to support his player’s opinion to stay with them. The outcome was that he was able to be a part of a state championship team. Another incident was when Gerry and other team members decided to join a riot against the blacks. Coach Yoast intercepts them as they would get into trouble if they went along with the riot. Even though Coach Yoast stopped the players from participating the riot, he still supported their decision on why they wanted to join the riot but taught them a new way to look at the situation. Coach Bill Yoast was an effective participative leader because he always tool in consideration about other opinions about certain situations regardless of what the situation is.
Gerry Bertier is considered as an autocratic leader in the movie. Gerry has the ability to influence other opinions without their suggested opinion. One incident was when he kicked his best friend Ray off the team, when Ray refused to block for Rev a team member of the opposite race. Gerry reasoning for his actions was because Ray did not want to follow Gerry demand to come together as a team. The outcome to his decision was that he lost a friend but gain more respect from other team members. Another incident was when Gerry and Julius had a conversation ending by saying” attitude reflects leadership” (Yulk, 2012). This decision was made because the team’s attitude was just a mimic of Gerry’s. The outcome was when Gerry changed his attitude toward the players of opposite race the other team members would follow. Gerry’s leadership style was effective because he got his teammates to follow a decision he made without any questions or going against his decision.
Conclusion
Most leaders do not have all the leadership styles, but some do. Leaders are more than supervisors and managers, they are also mentors. In the movie, Remember the Titans (2000), Coach Boone, Coach Yoast and Gerry Bertier showed great leadership abilities throughout the movie. They was able to take certain situations and turn them around to fit their need and the need of others. Even though they had different leadership styles they still had one main goal in focus, which was to bring the team together as one.
