The environment a person lives in can influence his/her characteristics. In William Golding’s novel Lord of the Flies, a plane filled with English schoolboys crashes on an unknown island. The boys, who were used to living in a wealthy society where their needs were always provided for, had to adopt a new, completely different lifestyle in order to survive. Because there was no one to take care over the young boys, they became like savages, unbound by rules. This eventually led to them killing wild animals and even each other. Golding’s novel connects to the difficulties of traveling to other countries. Because of the cultural diversities, it is difficult for a person to adjust to the lifestyle of another country, because he/she has…

“Be formless, shapeless, like water. When you pour water in a cup, it becomes the cup. When you pour water in a bottle, it becomes the bottle. When you pour water in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Water can flow and it can crash. Be water my friend.” This quote from my childhood hero Bruce Lee has given me inspiration and motivation to adapt to changes in my life and to keep working.…

Take for example Thandie Newton, a well known actress, even she had to adapt to her enviroment. Thandie admits that she was "the black aitheist girl in an all white Catholic school." She didn't fit in, and often felt left out because of her differences. She became depressed, stating that "My self was a car crash, and I wound up with Bulimia on a therapist's couch." However, if she was just placed in a different enviroment, with people that are more similar to her, then she wouldn't have felt left out. The class decisively began to simmer down a little, my inner-mood began to raise. However just when I thought that the class was going to be calmer than before one of the foolish misfits gets on-called. Beginning in the 1960s, middle and upper class populations began moving out of the suburbs and back into urban areas. At first, this revitalization of urban areas was "treated as a ‘back to the city' movement of suburbanites, but recent research has shown it to be a much more complicated phenomenon" (Schwirian 96). This phenomenon was coined "gentrification" by researcher Ruth Glass in 1964 to describe the residential movement of middle-class people into low-income areas of London (Zukin 131). More specifically, gentrification is the renovation of previously poor urban dwellings, typically into condominiums, aimed at upper and middle class professionals. Since the 1960s, gentrification has appeared in large cities such as Washington D.C., San Francisco, and New York. This trend among typically young, white, upper-middle class working professionals back into the city has caused much controversy (Schwirian 96). The arguments for and against gentrification will be examined in this paper.…
