MP3 playes in class
Persuasive Speech.

Good morning fellow students and teachers, today I’m going to be convincing you that you should be able to listen to MP3 players in class. So how many of us love to listen to music? It’s apart of everyone’s life, especially now with the convenience of all these iPods and phones that play music. So I’m sure that already most of you students are already agreeing with me, but for those who aren’t, and teachers, listen to the rest of my speech and I’m sure ill be able to change your perspective.

So honestly, how many of us always enjoy school? Yeah I know, it can get boring, so if we were allowed to listen to music in class, how much more enjoyable would it be? We would look forward to each class, look forward waking up and going to school. Well still not convinced, I’ll move on to my next point.

How many of us often get distracted in class, most of us yeah? If it’s someone talking, someone dropping something, noises outside, it happens to all of us. Also there would be less talking because people are trying to listen to there music. So fewer distractions equal to maxim learning time and productivity. Right now if someone banged on the door over there I guarantee 99% of you will look, but if you were listening to music, you wouldn’t of would you? Some people think that you will be more distracted but I think my point above proves that wrong.

Now my previous arguments have all been debatable, now time for some facts, research shows that listening to music in class increase memory, concentration and lots of other benefits, but don’t take my word for it, the BBC posed online this article “A research team from the Stanford University School of Medicine has showed that music engages the areas of the brain involved with paying attention, making predictions and updating the event in memory.“ The links here if you want to have a further read. http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/studentlife/debate/2009/11_music.shtml

So in conclusion, listening

Teachers, principles, administrators, superintendents, and any other school dignitary’s goal are for the students to do their best at everything that they can do. How can they do that when they are denied access to a learning technique that is not cheating, not wrong or inappropriate? Listening to music while they work. “Music makes doing task easier for some people.” - Leonard Daoussis and Stuart J. Mckelvie. I am a junior at Creekview High School and I have been here for 2 years.(Ethos) I have had some teachers that let students listen to music while they work and some that have not. I have always in my opinion found that the teachers that do relate to the students more, which in turn captures the students focus, attention, and effort. All of these lead students to learn more efficiently. Learning more efficiently is one huge goal that an every educator has.(Logos) Generically students also like to think that they are independent, most of the time, if they really want to listen to music, then they are most likely going to anyway. This causes kids that are trying to work harder and learn more to get into trouble, because of a silly and stupid rule. Ask yourself, how do you feel when you listen to your favorite song? (Rhetorical Question) Now imagine if you combined that feeling with schoolwork. A lot more students would actually want to be at school, and if they want to be there, then they are going to want to give everything they have into working.(Repetition) I’m not saying that everyone will do that but because one person doesn’t focus, should that effect the futures of other students. It would be surprising to find out that under a rude, slacking, and disrespectful student could be a Straight A student if you left them alone with their work and their headphones. Kids should be allowed to do their work anyway that’s best for them to learn, which includes allowing kids to listen to music.…

As we will see, by simply listening to pleasant music in the background while doing an arduous task can make it seem so much easier, or in some cases, music may not increase positive attitude, but will ease the strain of an activity. A study was conducted by Shawn E. Mueske, a graduate student at Mankato State University, to determine the effects of background music on a biology lab. He studied to determine the effects of background music on attitude, achievement, time spent in the laboratory and on task behavior (Mueske 6-7). He used a control group which entailed one lab where no music was present, and one experimental group which listened to popular/soft rock music at an appropriate, soft sound level for background music (14). He found that there was no real difference in attitude or achievement among the two groups, but there was a significant increase in time spent in the laboratory and time spent on task…

Firstly, I want to explain you why I chose this subject to my persuasive speech. It is kind of a rare and a sad story. Three years ago, I had friend who was studying architecture in Belgium. One day he was walking to the subway to get his school as usual. As I have been told, he was listening some music from his ipod and I know he generally does it really loud. Then he was so into the music that he could not hear the train was coming towards him. He was hit by a train and died in the age of 20.…

Although many research findings can be confusing or contradictory (Yehuda, 2011), it has been shown many ways and in many times that music affects the brain psychologically. Elliot, Polman, & McGregor (2011) found that music only has the desired psychological effect 50% of the time. Musical activity requires the use of most regions of your brain and almost every neural subsystem (Levitin, 2006). Hoffman & Lamme (1989) found that it is more helpful to learn with music and information is picked up more easily by the brain. Most times when background music is playing, people hear, but do not listen (Jourdaid, 1997). It is also shown by Jourdaid (1997) that while we hear with our brain stems, we listen with our cerebral cortex. When music is put in the background and we only hear it, the brain doesn’t meet or overcome new perceptual challenges, therefore nothing new is learned (Jourdaid, 1997).…

Does classical music really help you study better? Many recent research studies show that music idoes in fact improve cognitive thinking. In 1993, researchers at the University of California at Irvine discovered the so-called Mozart Effect - that college students "who listened to ten minutes of Mozart's Sonata for Two Pianos in D major K448 before taking an IQ test scored nine points higher" than when they had sat in silence or listened to relaxation tapes. Other studies have also indicated that it doesn't matter the artist; people retain information better if they hear classical or baroque music while studying.…

After decades of budgetary neglect as an "elective," music is reasserting itself thanks to a growing body of scientific data that shows how vital it is to a student's success in all academic areas. It is said that music is hard-wired into human brains and that it has existed from the early days of humankind, possibly even predating language. Science says we're full of it. Listening to music hurts our ability to recall other stimuli, and any pop song -- loud or soft -- reduces overall performance for both extraverts and introverts. A Taiwanese study linked music with lyrics to lower scores on concentration tests for college students, and other research have shown music with words scrambles our brains' verbal-processing skills. "As silence had the best overall performance it would still be advisable that people work in silence," one report dryly concluded.…
