Deceit I also enjoyed Goody Cloyse's character. Goody Cloyse character is based on an actual woman (Sarah Cloyce), who was tried and convicted of witchcraft during the historical Salem Witch Trials of 1692. Her character proves that people hide their real identities. Goody is a Christian woman who assists young people study the Bible, but in secret she performs magic rituals and joins witch conventions in the forest.…

Do you get along with your family? Well in 1942 during the reign of Adolf Hitler, The Frank family and the Van Daan family were forced to not only get along with their own family, they had to with another family of three also. Anne and Peter certainly didn’t have the best relationships with their own families. In those times of conflict there has to be a high authority figure to calm things down. Especially in this time, that was the man of the house. Mr. Frank and Mr. Van Daan are different as fathers, husbands, and even leaders.…
One of the traumatic experiences throughout Valentino Achak Deng’s journey from Sudan to Kenya is during the period where they are famished and they have to eat the raw meat. In Book 1 Chapter 15, 250 boys including Valentino stopped at a village to get some protection, rest and food. However a group of boys tried to steal food from the villagers and the group was chased out. They continue their journey with the minimum amount of food and supplies. Many of them complain about empty stomach and some are left to die on the roadside. Luckily, some soldiers offers them meat of an elephant. Most of the boys eat the raw meat because they are too hungry to wait for it to cook. In the morning, Deng does not wake up from his sleeping. Valentino feels very sad, so he remains silent for the majority of the journey.…
Coyotes are known for reeling in chickens. That is what Mendez and other smugglers do to get large amounts of money from desperate illegal immigrants coming into the United States. Tragedies, like the Yuma 14/ Welton 26 occur often. Many deaths go unnoticed and some of those that enter the desert, never return. In the true account The Devils Highway by Luis Alberto Urrea, The Welton 26 faced betrayal, hardship, and the possibility of death with great courage and peserverance.…
“It was not courage, exactly; the object was not valor. Rather, they were too frightened to be cowards” (pg 22). This quote perfectly embodies the view Tim O’Brien has on courage, as he eloquently demonstrates in his book The Things They Carried. Although all the characters of this novel display O’Brien’s point of view, the three shining examples of this are Norman Bowker, Jimmy Cross, and Tim O’Brien himself.…
in the second round of the 2012 NFL Supplemental Draft. He played in two seasons before he got tested and violated the NFL drug policy. In 2013 he was suspended two games and after that season 2014- 2016 he kept repeatedly using marijuana which he caught an addition of off. He had so much potential to become one of the best receivers in the NFL and also could have left his print in the league becoming a potential NFL hall of famer/ legend. He would never know his potential because of the drug test he keeps failing which will eventually get him to lose interest from teams wanting him and will eventually cause him to not have a chance of coming back to the NFL.…
I have read two-thirds of, It's Kind of a Funny Story. I was supposed to stop at half way, but it is so good that I lost track of time. Craig Gilner is such an intense character with many difficulties trying to manage his stressful life. He has support from numerous people, including his family and his friends. One goal Craig is approaching, is to be a better Craig. Checking himself into the hospital for having suicidal tendencies was already a big step in trying to reach this goal. That shows how much he wants to change, when things could have very easily went a different way. The actions that Craig took that night when he called the suicide hot line demonstrates the kind of person he wants to be. Craig realizes that he needs to get better, which makes me think his motivation for completing this goal is fantasizing about how great his life is going to be when he…
In the 19th century, America was undergoing significant social reform, resulting in many different definitions of American freedom. To Henry Clay, a famous senator, American freedom meant liberty for all people, including slaves, and he also cared deeply about American unity. These beliefs led Clay to condemn slavery, and to also be a strong supporter of the Whig party, as unity was a very important value in their ideology. Another notable figure in the 19th century, Denmark Vesey was also in favor of abolishing slavery, but fought for his definition of American freedom in a very different way. Comparing these characters from the 19th century depicts the numerous interpretations of American freedom as well as the various ways to defend those…
During World War II there was so much evil and violence. Jews were being burned in stoves. They had to hide from the Nazis. Despite all this Anne Frank still managed to believe that “people are really good at heart.” This is not necessarily true. In The Diary of Anne Frank, Mr Van Daan is a very selfish man which means that he disproves Anne’s quote. The men in Night by Eli Wiesel also couldn’t care less about the Jews in the concentration camps. In the Journal Entries Anne’s belief is disproven because people are stealing food and beating people up. Not everyone is truly good at heart as we can see from these sources.…
Alice Walker crafts the character of Dee Johnson in the short story "Everyday Use" in a clever way. Starting from the first paragraph, Walker creates an image of Dee, who at first seems very shallow. Dee then becomes a more complex character as the story progresses. Blessed with both brains and beauty, Dee emerges as someone who is still struggling with her identity and heritage.…
