In “The Landlady” a short story by Roald Dahl, shows the theme appearances don't often reflect reality. The story starts with Billy Weaver who was going find a cheap hotel, when Billy discovers a small motel. Billy rang the doorbell and an old lady appeared, she acted so nice and…
What the narrator says about her makes her sound very stern and selfish. She sometimes tells a little too much to people about how the town became to be. This makes me think that she is selfish by telling people these things. For example, “Miss Strangeworth would frown a little and sound stern- ‘but it should have been a statue of my grandfather. There wouldn’t have been a town here at all if it hadn’t been for my grandfather and the lumber mill.” She sounded very stern and selfish towards the people and visitors of the town. She thought the statue should have been of her grandfather. In addition, “Miss Strangeworth never gave out any of her roses, although the tourist often asked her.” This quote shows that she is selfish because she doesn’t want to give her roses away. People in the story might as well think she is selfish because she wouldn’t give people her roses. From this evidence, the author says she is stern, and the reader can tell she is…
She is portrayed as an old lady who has too much pride and wants to be in the know of every tiny piece of gossip in town. In the beginning of the story, it gives the readers the impression that she was a sweet old lady who takes much pride in her rose bush and enjoys the town gossip too much. Ms. Strangeworth comes off as prideful, intrusive and blunt. Ms. Strangeworth was portrayed as prideful throughout the story when she took so much pride in her rose bush which had been passed down to her by her family. She explained to everyone, including tourists who just pass through the town about how she inherited this magnificent rose bush and the first house ever built on Pleasant Street by her grandfather. She believed that she deserved much appreciation, honor and gratitude from the people of the small town because of her grandfather. Her when the town decided to put up a statue of Ethan Allen instead of her grandfather, she was disappointed and muttered “ but it should have been a statue of my grandfather. There wouldn’t be a town here at all if it hadn’t been for my grandfather and the lumber mill.” This shows the readers that she believed that the town was her’s and no one else’s. In the text, it claims that Ms. Strangeworth would not give out or share her flowers with anyone else because she believed that the roses belonged within her household. “.. it bothered Ms. Strangeworth to think of people wanting to carry them away, to take them into strange towns, and down strange streets.” Even when people requested for her beautiful roses for the town’s church, she would refuse. “When the new minister came, and the ladies were gathering flowers to decorate the church, Miss Strangeworth sent over a great basket of gladioli.” This tells us that she is very protective of her roses and would not even spare a…

The most blatant and simple type of humor is found while observing the flat characters of Mrs. Freeman and Mrs. Hopewell. These two women begin the story by participating in routine gossip with one another. Their constant bickering and desire to feel superior to the other is humorous because of how uneducated they sound. O’Connor puts them in the category of “good country people” due to the fact that they are pure, simple, and honest. This is ironic because good country people are referred and compared to as trash multiple times in the story. Another example of irony includes when Mrs. Hopewell said that the Freemans were a “godsend,” but the reason she had hired them was that there were no other applicants. Despite Mrs. Freeman being extremely nosy, Mrs. Hopewell ironically refers to her as a “lady and that she was never ashamed to take her anywhere or introduce her to anybody they might meet” (O’Connor 379). O’Connor uses these two women to lighten up the mood of the story before introducing Mrs. Hopewell’s atheist and pessimistic daughter Joy.…

I have read your summary regarding your current challenge with changing marketing trends and the upcoming renewal of your 5 year contract with a large quick service restaurant. You have had a long and profitable relationship with this international fast food company and this relationship has been an important part of your firm’s growth. While you do face some obstacles, there are solutions to overcome these. First hand and most importantly lets point out and discuss the problems you face. First the market trend issue: The marketing trend challenge you currently face is a decline in the sale of kid meals. With technology advancing kids no longer value the toys you market. In addition, child obesity and health problems are receiving greater attention in the media and the threat of advertising regulations is increasing, these regulations are already in place in Europe. Your manufacturing costs in China have gone up 40% due to an increase in raw material costs and export tariffs. And to top it off the overall time to market these toys is lengthy. Last and most important your team has been ineffective in addressing these market trends, and working collectively to resolve these issues.…
First, in the physiology section the reader can learn that Miss Strangeworth acts the way she does because of her old age. In the short story, Miss Strangeworth does say that she is seventy-one years old multiple times. One of the examples is when the tourist asked how old she was and she said “she was seventy-one, Miss Strangeworth told the tourist,” (204). The reader also finds out that she is the oldest person in town and her ancestors helped build the town from the very beginning. Since she is the oldest person in town, she feels like the town is hers and she is in control. This makes her a hateful person inside which results to her writing the letters.…
From The Abolition of Slavery and the Slave Trade I picked two writings. The two writings that I chose were “The Negro’s Complaint” and “The Sorrows of Yamba”. I chose these two because they seemed interesting. Both writings seem to focus on slaves wanting to be free. Free from being held captive by another individual. In the writing “Sorrows of Yamba” stanza one it says “In St. Lucie’s distant isle. Still with Africa’s love I burn; Parted many a thousand mile, never, never to return.” Here this woman knows that she is being taken away and she will never come back. She would rather die than to sit and be treated the way she is being treated. Stanza 2 she talks about being able to get rest. She’s tired of being beat and crying from a broken heart. She is longing for peace and freedom. In “The Negro’s Complaint” the writer talks about men being sold into slavery. In stanza 2 he states “Still in thought as free as ever, He thinks of freedom and wishes that it would come true. He states that he doesn’t see any difference in color and how they sweet doing work for their master. Both poems talk about working for their masters and the brutality that they faced. Poem one was about a woman describing her pains as a slave and the other poem talks about men. “In The Sorrows of Yamba” I believe the lady had a child and the child died. It seemed as if the mother didn’t mind her child dying, because she didn’t want her child bought into slavery. From all the work that this woman did she became ill as well. The men in “The Negro’s Complaint” complained and still worked to the point where they would shed blood. Both poems speak on many different things but both focus on the hardships of being a slave. Everyone wants to be free and not controlled by another…
