Book Review:
Characters:
Hercule Poirot: Poirot is a Belgian detective, speaks English with a French accent and uses French expressions in his conversations. He is a short, plump man with very particular and enormous moustaches that he is identified with. He is an internationally known detective. Poirot is the main character in the story because he discovers who the murderer or the murderers on the ‘Orient Express’ are.
Mr Bouc: Mr Bouc is Poirot’s great friend; he helps Poirot in interviewing the suspected murderers of the ‘Orient Express’. He is the Director of the Wagon Lit company.
Dr Constantine: the doctor who examined the victim after his death and established the time of death. Helpful adviser of Poirot during the investigation.
Samuel Edward Ratchett: The victim. His real name is Cassetti; he is a very evil person because in the past he had kidnapped a little girl, Daisy Armstrong. That caused Daisy’s death and consequently Daisy’s dad committed suicide; this also caused the police to unfairly accuse a nurse and she committed suicide as well. He was condemned but due to legal technicalities he was acquitted. He changed his name and country but lived the rest of his life in fear of revenge from different people. In the book Agatha Christie writes that he was like an animal in a cage, evil covered by a respectable look. He died stabbed in 12 parts of the body.
The Wagon Lit Conductor: His real name is Pierre Michel. He is a Frenchman and lives near Calais. He is thoroughly respectful and honest but not perhaps remarkable for brains.
The Secretary of Ratchett: His name is MacQueen; he is a young cheerful American. He gives Poirot and his interviewing crew very important information, he tells them that Ratchett was being threatened by letters saying for example: “We’re coming to get you Ratchett” so Poirot realises that maybe someone is looking revenge and that is maybe why they killed him.
