The Madonna and child has certain similarities and differences that can relate to the Galatea. First and most, there is a sense of love and beauty in both of these objects. But what does separate these two objects is the motion and activity that is taken place in the Galatea. There are all sorts of figures in the Galatea, such as flying angles with crossbows, a couple of dolphins and even a horse. However, the Madonna and Child is a more realistic object showing a mother holding her son with flowers in the surrounding. The Madonna and Child is strictly about love and compassion whereas the Galatea is a combination of love, grace, and betrayal.
A painting does not have to involve humans to demonstrate love and beauty. A great example of this is Flower Still Life by Rachel Ruysch. It portrays flowers from random seasons all put into one vase to display an intriguing but breath taking beauty of nature. This painting is very unique in the way the colors where chosen and the creativity of the angle that the vase is positioned on the table. Compared to the Galatea, Flower Still Life demonstrates the power of life without an angry fist or massive physics as shown through the artworks of the Galatea. Flower Still Life has a meaning far greater than the Galatea object. The Galatea is sending a message of deceit in a world of fantasy where love goes beyond reality, it is a true painting of classic art.
When visiting the Getty Center I noticed that the Madonna and Child object was different from that of the text book. The Museum object seems to be a true painting and representation of the Madonna and Child. However, the in-text object demonstrated a picture in a stone figure made out of terracotta with polychrome glaze. In other words, the in-text object was not a painting but nonetheless a great representation of the Madonna and Child. While in the Getty Center I also noticed from the Flower Still Life object that is was quite different from the painting in the textbook. The in-text object displays the flowers in a diagonal position, where as the museum's object was in an almost perfect face to face position. The flowers also happen to be different in colors and positioning.
From visiting the Getty Center I learned a lot of the similarities and differences that objects are displayed. An object may be displayed in a different manner but it can still give the same meaning it has. The Galatea happened to be my favorite object even though I didn't encountered it at the museum.

This paper will explore very important differences and similarities of two master pieces of art work, both named "Madonna and Child", available at Metropolitan Museum of Art. First piece, "Madonna and Child" C.1230, was made by Berlinghiero, an Italian artist who lived in early thirteenth century. The other version of "Madonna and Child" was made in 1480's, by a famous Venetian artist Giovanni Bellini, who lived between 1430-1516. Therefore, this short paper will be an attempt to show the change in art occurred in the same area but in different times.Starting with the "Madonna and Child" of Berlinghiero, which is a very unnatural image, Mary and Christ look flat because there is lack of showing depth. Mary is holding Jesus in her arm in front of a golden background. While Jesus looks towards his right, Mary is looking at the viewer. She has suffering expression in her face. The lines around her eyes and forehead, and her lips shows that she is upset. Mary appears like she knows the future crucifixion of her son. Also another reason why she is upset, would be the isolation and anger towards her because of having a baby in an illegitimate way, which is not true but most of the people didn't understand when she gave a birth to Christ . Mary's hands, one holding Jesus, one pointing him, are very thin and long. Jesus, unlike Mary, has a calm expression and his face looks very old and mature for his body's size. He is holding a scroll, probably it's a religious text from the Bible, which may refer to bringing the direct afflatus of the Holy Spirit.Performing "Madonna and Child", Berlinghiero was influenced by Byzantine icons, small portable paintings depicting holy figures usually Christ and the Virgin. This icon-like image exhibits many of the characteristics of Byzantine traits, for instance, the Virgin's long straight nose and small mouth, schematic linear folds of Christ's robe. When examining…

We know that the subject matter of both Cimabue’s Madonna and Child Enthroned and Giotto’s Madonna Enthroned depicts the Virgin mother holding her son Jesus Christ upon a golden throne with angels at either shoulder. After looking at Cimabue’s work, it is debatable whether his apprentice Giottos surpassed the man. In manners of skill, Giotto’s more classical and naturalist style took on other stylistic components that very well exhibited a 3-dimensional space upon a 2-dimensional plane. In personal opinion, if the goal was to surpass Cimabue, then Giotto definitely showed prowess by giving his figure of the virgin a more assertive and realistic presence. Both Cimabue and Giotto use the ever-common gold background to unify their pieces. The…

In this artwork attributed to Luca della Robbia made in 1460-70, Virgin and Child with lilies depicts Mary as the mother of God, instead of the queen in heaven, and emphasized the maternal side of Virgin and the human nature side of Christ. As one of the most popular devotional subject, it conveys the purity and virgin statues of Mary through symbolic pattern such as lilies and a suggestion of Virgin Mary’s perpetual virginity through the annunciation angels, which Virgin Mary born Christ the child without sin, to present the holy spirit of Virgin Mary and, therefore, evoke devotions to Virgin Mary. In addition, when comparing to Giotto’s Ognissanti Madonna in the Ognissanti Church in Florence, this relief shows us a shift towards naturalism in its depicting of Virgin and child, as well as presenting of space and colors, which fits into Vasari’s description of an naturalism art development trend. Finally, due to the size of the artwork, I suggest this piece of work was for domestic use, instead of for public devotion in churches. I also suggest it might was made to hang exteriorly on the wall near a garden due to its durable characteristic of terracotta and the subject depicted as Virgin and Child in nature.…

The art piece that I selected for my analysis is called The Triumph of Divine Love by Peter Paul Rubens. The artwork is an oil painting on canvas, circa 1625. This piece of art was commission by Isabella Clara Eugenia, Infanta of Spain and Portugal. The Triumph of Divine Love was one of eleven art pieces in a series portraying the Eucharist cycle, an important issue in the Catholic-Protestant strife. Its purpose was to aid in the Catholic Reformation and the artwork was to be displayed at the Convento de las Descalzas Reales in Madrid. (Ringling Museum n.d.)…

The “Virgin with child Enthroned” was created around 1200- 1025. Both of them belong to the Uffizi Gallery, Florence. The Ognissanti Madonna is much bigger/3.25 x 2m/ and it was painted for the altar of the church of Ognissanti in Florence. Both pieces of art are painted with tempera on wood.…

Marble statue of the Diadoumenos is a Roman statue by Polykleitos from the Flavian period, A.D. 69-96. Polykleitos was a Greek sculptor in bronze of the fifth and the early fourth century BC. Next to Phidias, Myron and Kresilas, he is considered the most important sculptor of Classical antiquity. He was of the school of Argos, a contemporary of Phidias and, in the opinion of the Greeks, his equal. Diadumenos means “diadem-bearer”.…

Presentation is everything. People often over look something because the first impression they experience is lack luster. The Sutliff museum is full of timeless treasures, offering a wonderful insight to 19th century history and the underground railroad. Unfortunately, the current promotional material does not do the museum justice. It appears out date and doesn't grab the attention of an audience. I’d like to rebrand the promotional material for The Sutliff Museum so that it reflects an updated, fresh design that draws people to the museum. My intent is to design two brochures, an information flyer, and update the website layout.…

East Indian Sculpture and Baroque sculpture: How are they different and how are they similar? After circling the museum for an hour, bouncing from security guard to security guard (trying to find my way to the baroque sculptures) I was finally able to answer that question. The two examples I chose were "Nessus and Dejanira" from the Baroque period and "Loving Couple" from Eastern India. The reason I chose these two specifically is because they both involved a man and a woman, making it more interesting for comparing and contrasting. I also chose five additional pieces to discuss later in my paper.…

The statue of Virgin and Child is a religious humane figure of the Virgin Mother Mary and Jesus as a young boy which is associated with the Catholic Church and Christianity. This sculpture illustrates a mother and son involved in a tender moment. The statue is big in size and its dimensions are 53 x 42 x 28 inches and sits in the center of the Medieval Art exhibit in room 304 of the museum. The Virgin Mary in this sculpture appears very large in size as compared to the child. Her curly brown hair is positioned back away from her face, which is long and cascades down the sides of her face on to her shoulders. The skin of this sculpture resembles those associated with Caucasians with thin lips and long pointed noses. Her complexion or skin color I cannot tell because it is featured in a very dark room of the museum. On top of her head there appears to be a cloak or hood like garment that comes up to the middle of her head. She is wearing a long free flowing gown or dress underneath the cloak while she is sitting on a bench or piece of wood like structure. The child in this sculptured art has short curly brown hair and is wearing loose fitted clothing from that time period while sitting on the lap of the Virgin Mary. He appears…

The first piece of artwork that will be looked is from the Renaissance Era. Da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa”(c. 1519) a painting that is known around the world, which has been known to cause skepticism as to who is this woman. Did she really exist? Or is this merely a self-portrait that Da Vinci was able to show his private devotion for the female form? The second piece of artwork that will be discussed is from The Middle Ages. Antonio Veneziano’s “Virgin and Child”(c. 1380) both pieces of art work stem from different eras but share many commonalities as well as shows the transformation of art techniques from Sfumato, to perspective, as well as linear perspective, Humanism, foreshortening and more between each era.…

The subject of the work I observed was a Madonna enthroned painting, a pictorial representations of Mary, the mother of Jesus, with her child. The event depicted shows baby Jesus sitting on his mother's lap. As for symbolism and representation, “The significantly larger size of the Madonna and child group indicates that they are more important. Her traditionally red gown signifies the passion of Christ and her blue mantle that she is queen of Heaven. Her ornate throne, which repeats aspects of Gothic architecture, signifies that she is not only the queen of Heaven but represents the Catholic Church itself. The golden star that falls on her shoulder derives from her title "Star of the Sea" (Latin Stella Maris), which is the meaning of the Jewish form of her name, Miriam (Minneapolis Institute of Arts)”. The work is representational, somewhat non realistic because of fine visible brush strokes. The work is large and the size did affect the impression this work made on me. I like big art works because it's just that much better to look at, being able to observe many details of the artist. The work stands at a height of 5 feet tall and almost 2 feet in width. The painting does look a bit flat and doesn't really have any space. By this I'm referring to character's face, hands and feet. Proportions of the face were off which caused it to look flat. The reason I said this painting is somewhat unrealistic was because of the black brush strokes. Despite it being flat, Buonaccorso did a good job of shading. The gown of Mary and baby Jesus' clothing shows a bit of volume. From my observation, the colors I see on this painting are yellowish-gold, dark-blue, reddish pink and black. As for it's overall composition, I didn't really like it because it's so small in terms of width. So everything was squeezed into such a small space. Unlike other Madonna paintings, this one doesn't have any angels or other characters besides Mary and Jesus. In my opinion, the artist combined the…

When I visited the Brooklyn Museum, I got to see many different works of art. While looking around on the 3rd floor, there was one specific piece that caught my attention, “King Senwosret III”. King Senwosret III was a 12th Dynasty King that ruled from c. 1836-1818 BCE. King Senwosret III was considered to be one of the most powerful rulers during the middle kingdom. This small, black granite sculpture that caught my eye is of him. It was created during the time of the middle kingdom. It is not known for sure, but this artwork is believed to be from Hierakonpolis, Egypt. During this time period, sculptures of kings depicted a more real look. The Middle Kingdom lasted from c. 1975-1640 BCE. Art was very important to the Egyptian culture. The sculpture of King Senwosret III has certain characteristics that make it obvious to see that it is an Egyptian work.…

Parmigianino's, The Madonna with the long neck, was commissioned for a family chapel. Compared to Raphael, Parmagianino has a different ideal of beauty, “which he establishes with with the large amphora offered by the figure at the left. In his painting, the perfect oval of Mary's head rests on a swanlike neck, while her body swells only to taper her feet, which mimics the shape of the amphora”, according to Janson. In his painting the figures and bodies are not even or proporional, the composition is unbalanced and the figures are heavily balanced to the left. “The Madonna with the long neck, with its cold and memorable elegance, offers a vision of unearthly perfection”, according to Janson. The Madonna's head is tiny in comparison to her…
