Museum Workout Critique
“The Metropolitan Museum of Art Is About to Become Your Favorite New Fitness Destination” In the search of new ways to connect to the general population, The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, New York, has begun a workout program, “The Museum Workout”. In collaboration with the Monica Bill Barnes and Company dance group, representative performers, and even technology crew members, lead activities. The program is described as, “a curious hybrid: part guided tour; part all-levels fitness class; and part performance piece blending choreography, music, and narration.” The intention of the class is to reinvent the museum experience and eliminate the awkward human interactions often seen in a gallery. The article is written as a descriptive …show more content…
This is certain because mentions of giggling and excitement create a happy image for the reader, and words, such as, “accessible” and “charmingly unconventional,” shed a positive light while retelling the story. Another reason Vogue can be certain to write a positive review on the occasion is a very simple conflict of interest. The American Vogue creative director is Anna Wintour, considered the American fashion expert; with little research, anyone could also find Anna’s relation to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Creating the most prestigious fashion magazine in the states, composed an obvious decision that the museum should desire Wintour’s work on the museum board, for the benefit of the costume institute. With this executive tie, from magazine to museum, Vogue has somewhat of a responsibility to represent the Metropolitan Museum of Art in good light and promote its events. The author may be biased, but very little opinion is presented to whether she favored or disliked the experience. This is another tactic for the audience reading to feel involved, drawn to pursue the class themselves to gain the novelty

This paper has been far more difficult to research than I thought it would be. Unfortunately, photographers are not always given the full credit they desrve for their work and therefore, it is impossible to find the names of the artists of some of my favorite photographs. Instead, I decided to just look up popular photographers in the fashion industry in hopes of having easier access to information. Despite the fact that I now had the names of some of the most world famous fashion photographers, finding information on them is a whole other story in and of itself. As I am beginning to realize, the saying among the photography department is true- if you are not Annie Leibovitz, you will not be known until you are dead. For example, one of my favorite photographers is Diane Arbus. She had compiled vast amounts of work throughout her career. Unfortunately, all of her works were found in a locker after her suicide and then she was seen as an artist. To summarize what I am saying is that the only famous photographers are dead ones and all the successful ones are barely known. So in order for this research paper to even have the possibility of making it it to four pages, I am going to have to choose the cliché (yet greatly talented) photographer, Annie Leibovitz.…

This features and the museums’ distance from their local communities in culture and atmosphere can make many potential visitor feel that the space is not one for them. Museums in some communities virtual empty of locales because they have no hand or investment of any kind in it. However, by giving the public the opportunity to be actively involved the museum’s activities, a museum becomes relevant and meaningful to their communities. A good example of this can be seen in the Oakland Museum of California (OMCA), mentioned in McLean’s “Whose Questions, Whose Conversations?”. This museum has reworked itself into a places important to its community by welcoming local teenagers to co-curate an exhibit in its Gallery of California Art in 2009, called Cool Remixed. By getting these local teens involved in the creation of the exhibit, they not only made the exhibit, and hence the museum, mean something to them, their families and their friends, but also communicated to all the public that the museum is a welcoming…

Museums bring history and culture to life by allowing individuals to gain unique hands on experience that is different from learning from textbooks or television. One can never know the reality behind certain artifacts and art until they see it for themselves. The perception of viewing a multitude of replicas and pictures such as the Mona Lisa can be dramatically different from witnessing the painting up close. The interactive experience allows one to engage and immerse ourselves back into time to learn about the truth of different cultures and traditions. The intent of museums is not purely to enthrall historians and scholars, but to create an environment which is welcoming to all individuals. While historians argue that museums…

What is fashion? Fashion is wearing clothes, shoes, and accessories in the way that you like and sometimes praised by people. Nowadays, there are many magazine, newspapers, websites, and blogs are all about fashion styles. Many photographers take photos of famous stars, rich people, models, and designers’ runways. Bill is a photographer “on the street”, and he doesn’t care who is the person that he is taking the picture of. He only cares if he is interested in the styles that people are wearing or not. I have observed his photos, and I found out that Bill was also very concerned about details. He took picture with specific details such as shoes whether high or low, the hair styles whether they are suitable for the clothing or not, and the accessories whether they are still good looking with the clothing or not. I like this man and this film because Bill is not only working with the fashion, he also concerned about people’s arrangement skills of the clothing and give them comments when he is editing the pictures with his colleagues, he put his whole life with fashion and he is still passionate, and he is recording fashionable elements of details with the whole New York city, likewise, his photo, magazine, and newspaper collections are the fashion history of New York city.…

As dance, of all styles, becomes prevalent, an increasing number of people choose to dance for their profession and career. They devotedly train and practice dancing in order to show audiences the best performances. Audiences, as a result, learn to appreciate dance performances as pieces of art works. They become more willing to see how dancers use their bodies to express a special feeling or to tell a distinctive story aesthetically and exquisitely. Nevertheless, they seem to forget about a group of people who have physical defects and cannot dance freely as they wish. Amongst this group, some lost their limbs, whereas the others lost their sense of hearing and sight. Many of them, however, have one thing in common despite their different disabilities, that is, they love to dance as much as the able-bodied. Therefore, several dance companies have stood out to support these disabled dancers and offer them the opportunity for dancing on the stage. Amongst these companies, Candoco Dance Company, consisting of disabled and able-bodied dancers, has the most impact on erasing…

When one goes to a Museum, it is easy to assume that they will go to the most famous and well known pieces that are showcased, look at them, and then be well on their way. Although Museums are a part of the spectacle, when looked at in the right context they can also enable to viewer to gain a new perspective. What better a place than to think “otherwise” than a museum? The setting upholds works of art that are categorized and characterized by certain attributes. But these institutions can also view the everyday in a new context – take a look at the Surrealists or the Stituationalists. In Museum Hours, by Jem Cohen addresses how people should look at art through a different lens, and how value legitimizes collections of art in museums.…

The dance performance that I watched was by the San Diego Dance Theater, Library Dances. The dance was taken place at the Chula Vista Civic Center Library. There were 3 different dances during the event. The two dances that were choreographed by Jean Isaacs were “Two Forms” and “Water Lilies”. She is also the founder of San Diego Dance Theater. The other dance “Blot” was from a young choreographer’s showcase named Gina Bolles-Soresnsen. The dance occurred at a library, which was very intriguing and exciting. Libraries tend to not have a lot of art displayed. It was a first and definitely a good change to see dances being performed at a library. There was a very huge crowd watching the dances. I was very surprised and thrilled to see how many people still appreciate art in the form of dance. I saw all different kinds of people, children, old people younger people who watched the performances. It gave me hope that art is not dead and is still alive and thriving amongst all crowds. The audience including me was very welcomed by Jean Isaacs herself. She gave us a brief summary of her experience, her company and her dancers. It gave me a good idea what to expect and learn from the dance performance I was about to watch. I greatly admired the dancers’ bodies that moved freely and openly to the audience. It felt as if they were trying to send a message across. I was very surprised how different it is watching a dance on YouTube and watching it live. I can feel the dancers’ emotions and feelings through live dance that I cannot achieve watching online or on video. All three dances were very unique and had its own meaning and feeling to it. As each dance was performed, I saw myself changing emotions from one dance to another. The change of moods, gave a very great and energizing performance. Overall, I was very intrigued and amazed with the dance performances that day. It was not easy to depict their meaning but surely I did enjoy their dance a lot. It left…

A twenty-eight year old parading the streets wearing a long grey wig draws attention from wandering eyes, but stares change to understanding upon witnessing the wearer of that wig. Look into her history; likewise, and appreciate the multiple times she sported grey locks. In the world of Lady Gaga, the aged hairstyle expresses meaning and metaphor similar to many other statements she constructs her career upon. The grey wig illustrates the ending of an era, the period entrenched in representing the ideals of Gaga’s latest album. They exemplify her growth and maturation through the cycle of the album, and serve to respectfully and gingerly leave that period in the past.…
