Program :CARMINA BURANA

The MPO concert opened with choir singing with the whole orchestra playing their instruments. In the prelude, there are two movements. Both of these movements are exciting and dramatic in moods. At first, the violinists are playing with the skill of pizzicato .The woodwind part also plays a important part in creating the atmosphere. The musician hit the bass drum and increased the mood of grand in the exciting part. The pianist used the skills of staccato in performing too.

In the second part, the music started with the woodwind part which created a contrast mood with the previous part. The musicians blew the French horn with the accompany of the triangles before the choir started singing. It is a peaceful part. In the second movement, the baritone who sit beside the conductor started his solo with the accompany of some percussions such as triangle. Afterwards ,the strings part join the music. In the third movement, it has a drastic change in mood where the moods turn to lively and exciting. More instruments such as tambourine joined this movement and create the joyful environment. In the third part, it started with the strings part. The moods is lively and happy. Then a musician plays the flute alone which creates a short peaceful moment. After that brass joins the music and creates a richer tone color atmosphere. While, in the second movement, the main point is on the choir and they are singing in a repetition style which creates an echo effect. In the third movement, the choir is singing with the accompany of percussions and the moods is relaxing and lively.

In the forth part, the baritone starts singing again. This time ,he is singing in a more aggressive mood accompanied with the strings.The mood in this movement is angry and desperate. After that there is a short piece of bassoon solo and the tenor starts singing. I was

    Personally notable movements from the first piece of the program, Piano Trio in C Minor, Op. 2, are Andante and Vivace. Pappone, “lauded as a ‘first rate’ violinist by Maestro Lorin Maazel” and founder of the non-profit Delius Music Academy (Mallory Concert Series Program), executed technique perfection from my hearing. His pianoforte was divine and every note softly washed over the audience with pitch precision. Moving from the second to the third movement there was an exaggeration of sad drama.     The orchestras played this piece to create a great closing to the concert. The conductor made a great decision to arrange this song to be at the end giving almost a sense of closure. The addition of the percussionist again helped give the piece the nice lifted feeling, as well as help the orchestra stay together; however the dynamic contrast between the four sections was rather light.The use of a snare drum drastically changed this piece, it feels more like a slow waltz. The little use of dynamics, however, kept the melody from popping out as much as it should have. In the beginning of the piece everybody played the notes with space between then; however towards the end, a few of orchestra members played the notes smoothly and connected whereas the rest of the orchestra played the notes spaced. The intonation and a steady tempo was retained throughout the performance which gave this piece a focused tone. The violins and violas did an excellent job using full bows, but the cellos needed to use long bows so they can create a deep, rich, and crisp sound.     The Rhodes College Orchestra began the evening with the Palladio by Karl Jenkins. The Palladio had three different movements. The first movement, the Allegretto, started steadily with the double bass, violoncello, and viola. Then, the tempo became faster and the music more intense, with firm bow strokes from the violin. Throughout most of the movement the rhythm was fast, though there were a few measures where the rhythm slows gradually, but only lasting briefly before it revives again. Towards the end, the mood became lighter and more cheerful, leading the piece to a strong and bold ending. The second movement, the Largo, began quietly. The tempo was slow throughout this movement. The melody was quiet during most of the movement, thus making the vibrato more prominent. The music was loud at the center of the movement, but started to get slower and quieter when approaching the end, letting the ending gently fade out. The third movement, the Vivace, was loud and had a very fast tempo. Towards the midpoint the melody changed and became slow with a melody slightly similar to Largo but faster and more joyful.     To introduce the piece two cadenzas inspired by the same melody are performed over a continuous subtle harmony. The piece begins with sustained chords between the string instruments and wind instruments. This gives a relaxed effortless tone to the piece and resembles the calmness and tranquillity of a spring day in England. The violin then enters imitating the lark. The violin plays an ascending pattern with elongated arpeggios. The chords underneath drop out so the violin plays a solo introducing the first theme. The orchestra is quietly introduced and develops the almost folk like motif. A folk dance theme is then introduced led by the clarinet and flute and woodwinds as the solo cadenza is repeated. The full orchestra then comes in however it is still fairly restrained to imitate the English countryside. There is antiphonal exchange between the solo violin playing a trill and then the woodwinds imitating the bird like call. This is followed by the solo violin playing a series of cadenzas over the orchestra which could represent the lark flying over the countryside and rolling hills.     The timber was worm, and smooth. Moreover, the texture of this movement is likely to be homophonic because many note and the main instruments were the woodwinds that have the main melody.     The music was collage-like, meaning the listener could create pictures in their minds while taking in the artistic beauty. Composers during the Modernism Era strove to instill anxiety, disjunction, and hysteria in the audience. The first movement, Mars, the Bringer of War, achieved that goal and did not disappoint. Throughout the piece, there were points in which the music became increasingly louder with vigorous and energetic rhythms. This is an example of polyrhythms. Polyrhythms are conflicting simultaneous rhythmic patterns between different instruments. The woodwind section and brass section were alternating with each other, almost as if they were doing a “call” and “response.” Overall, I felt like this technique intensified the feelings of anxiety and fear, which are common associations when it comes to war. During this piece, I particularly paid attention to the strings section. The musicians were using the wood of their bow as opposed to the horse-hair part of the bow and striking their instruments. This technique is called ostinato. On the opposite side of the spectrum, my favorite piece, Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity, had a more joyous vibe. The violins played the same three notes at certain points during the piece, specifically the beginning and towards the end. They did so at a quick-pace as the brass comes in. As I looked around while Jupiter, The Bringer of Jollity was being performed I noticed that the audience seemed happy and inspired by the piece.
