For my assignment 6 in the online Music Appreciation class I have visited a Trumpet Studio of Dr. Kathryn Adduci, accompanied by Sharon Brook from 12:30pm on Thursday, December 4, 2014. This listening hour was taken place in the Concert Hall of the Music Department. As I saw, the audience was mostly students in casual clothes, and a few people in formal clothes. The program was in the following order: An “Overture and Finale” originally by Ronald Lo Presti; Concerto for Trumpet, 1. allegro (sonata) and Concerto for Trumpet, 3. allegro (rondo) by Joseph Haydn; Concert Etude by Alexander Goedicke and finally, “The Debutante” by Herbert L. Clarke. Unfortunately, the third composition had been cancelled on that day, so we could only hear 4 pieces out of the 5 songs. The structure of the instrument was different. In the first piece there were just trumpets next to each other and a conductor in the front facing them. In the rest of the piece there was a pianist on the left side and a trumpet in the middle of the stage.
The first composition was the “An Overture and Finale” performed by Keith Arbogast, Amanda Cienfuegos, Kelly Fabian, Paul Herrera, Matthew Michielin, Cortez Montalbo, Angel Ortega, Jose Sanchez, and Natasha Singha. The piece started with an uptempo tune and by just a few trumpets, and the others have joined later. When every trumpet joined the tempo became slower. There were multiple tunes and changing rhythm during this piece but the main theme always came back. The melody was disjunct. At the end of this piece they played in a lower pitch and everybody joined again.
The second piece was the Concerto for Trumpet, 1. allegro (sonata) originally by Joseph Haydn. The performer’s name was Jose Sanchez. This piece was performed with a piano accompaniment. The piano started with a nice tempo and then the trumpet followed the exact same rhythm as a response to the piano.     The first piece was called Quintet in g minor, Op. 56, No. 2. It was by Franz Danzi. The first movement was an Allegretto. It was in a major mode and in triple meter. It started with polyphonic texture. The flute and oboe were playing a portion of the melody and the clarinet was playing another melody, both over the bassoon and horn. There were portions of the movement in which the flute would play a melody above the rest of the instruments in homophonic texture. This gave the piece a light, fluttering sound. The second movement was an Andante. It started with the horn and flute playing with monophonic texture. This created a calm sound that brought on a feeling warmth indoors on a cold winter night. It was in a minor mode and in triple meter. The middle of the movement included a great deal of dissonance and had an atonal rhythm that felt a bit unsettling.     The saxophone, violin, bass, flute, and piano all played together; however, the bass was clearly the most dominant instrument.     This was an original created by the two performers together. Quite a few instruments were used in creating this piece such as a bass drum, xylophones, and symbols. The most interesting instrument was the center piece of the performance, a yellow with gold glitter drum shell that had its membrane gone which begs the question, is it still a membranophone if it has not membrane?     The quintet consisted of Adam Heller, Kendall Fowler, Chandler Boyd, Dan Sitler, and Tim Henderson. They started off with Blue Train by the great John Coltrane. It had a steady tempo and a smooth sound. The trumpet played by Adam Heller stood out during this tune. It was a great piece that the audience enjoyed thoroughly. The next tune played by this quintet is So Dance Samba by A. C. Jobim. The piano played by Chandler Boyd starts the tune out beautifully. The drums played by Tim Henderson keep the fast beat and tempo. The sax played by Kendell Fowler played wonderfully along with the trumpet played by Adam Heller. Both of these talented musicians stood out. The trumpet took the lead for most of this piece, but the bass played by Dan Sitler and the piano still stood out at portions. This piece ended on a loud note. Their next tune is Grass Fed that was impressively created by their director Scott Routenberg in one day. This tune had a fast tempo and a happy feel.     In the small city of Baldwin Park, CA, The Performing Arts Center, best known as The PAC Center by fellow citizens, was hosting Sierra Vista High School Harmony, which features the Vocal Ensemble, Concert Choir, and Treble Choir groups. Suzanne Brookey was the choir director and Wendi Turk was the piano accompanist. The performance started at 7:00 pm sharp, free admission, which means anyone can come and support this lovely choir group perform. Each choir group has their own pieces of work of music by different composers and each group performs it at separate times. First came treble choir, then two solos performed by Florence Gong who perform a song called Quella Fiamma and then it was Diego Ayala who performed Per La Gloria.     For my humanities report, I attended the Wind Ensemble concert at the Timko Barton lobby on October 8, 2015. The concert was so inspiring and refreshing for me since I love music and am currently studying music. Sitting with some many people and listening to beautiful music from a variety of genres was so restoring to the soul. Dr. John Jenkins, the director, was so motivating in every piece of music and of the program. The concert program ran smoothly as the ensemble band transitioned gradually to each different song piece. In addition the scenery added to the peaceful presence during the show.
