When working in this particular occupation many time sensitive decisions are made very quickly, because it can decide whether a person lives or dies. There have been times when driving the ambulance as an EMT I have received a call from dispatch to respond to a minor call incident and while in traffic a horrific accident may occur and immediately without thought I know what has to be done. I would contact dispatch and have them send the next closest unit to original call and stop and assist the victims in the car accident. Utilitarian analysis of an ethical problem has four steps, which I have personally used to help my previous employers resolve a small dilemma within the work staff. This incident occurred while working at Red Crescent Emergency Clinic, typically you are placed in groups of four or six, with all members of the groups usually in twos or threes alternating shifts between the same routes which allows for everyone to receive their days off. One day a team member of my group called in stating they were in the need of emergency leave for an entire week, which meant all routes would not be covered. A staff meeting was called to order to figure the best solution with the least loss to the company as well as the staff. A tenor paramedic mentioned that a trainee should take on the extra hours to obtain the experience, but this would result in the trainee running into overtime hours as well as not receiving any time off. While this conversation was occurring between a tenor paramedic and supervisor I focused on what the issue was, next I looked at who would be affected by the decision, then went through my head over both the good and bad outcomes of the decision, and lastly summed up those consequences.
