My Cultural Identity

Culture is the shared set of arts, ideas, skills, institutions, customs, traditions, attitudes, and values of a group of people that one shared or passed on. We all have a different culture, from our parents, and our friends. My own culture is my southern background with our strange customs, unique military lifestyle, and my overall generation. My mother was born and raised in Louisiana, so I carry a lot of her traditions and ideas. My family and I celebrate Mardi Gras, a celebration of floats all around New Orleans for two whole weeks celebrating the three kings, which most people around the world do not celebrate except for in the South. Food is also a very big part of my cultural identity. We as a family tend to eat a lot of southern comfort food. Anything from gumbo, jambalaya, po’boys, and red beans with rice. My family and I are very big on foods in general, but southern foods are a definite go to. From being raised by a mother and father from the South, and constantly going down to New Orleans, you pick up
He moved all across the country, like I am doing today. Place to place, house to house, however, being in the Coast Guard family comes with its perks. I get to learn new things about other places and people, and how to carry myself in new places with new people. Part of my culture is my understanding of others and adapting to their individual cultures. I have lived on the East Coast and the West Coast, both having quite different cultures. For instance, each of their lifestyles are a big part of their, and my, culture. East Coast is slow and relaxed while the West Coast is fast paced; because I have lived on the West Coast slightly longer I’ve adapted the fast paced ways of thinking.
