My English Learning Goal
In this era of globalization, it is inevitable for every country to do a lot of trade with each other. Taiwan is no exception. Taiwan is particularly a small island which is surrounded by the ocean. Besides, there are little sources of energy and minerals in this small island. Consequently, we need to use plenty of methods to get opportunities to trade with other countries. Taiwan is also a nation which is not admitted by UN so we are the minority in this world. We have to rely on the countries which have the diplomatic relation with us to provide some diplomatic protection. However, if we want to trade and find a national friend, we have to communicate with foreigners. Then, we need to speak in English, the language that can be understood in many places. To change another words, learning English is indispensable for the people in Taiwan. No doubt, I am included. Even though the reasons I mentioned above are the motivations which encourage people to learn the language differing from their mother tongue, they are simply two of the causes. Every individual has their own reasons to learn English. Some want to show off their skills of speaking another language; others feel like finding better jobs in the future. As for me, I am of the opinion that I have a different idea and target of learning English. To tell the truth, I didn’t have any ideas about learning English at the beginning. I learned the language just because my father thought it is significant. Nevertheless, I have changed my opinion of learning English as I have learned it for many years. I find English has a fascination for me since I love the way that foreigners use their words. Though I am the native Chinese speaker, I extremely hate to write the Chinese composition. I always can hardly write the beautiful and proper sentences; accordingly, I didn’t get good grades on my Chinese composition all the time. English is different. It can be used by some brief words to express the whole sentences which

Because when I came to the United States at a young age I faced a lot challenges and hardships but I decided to keep going and stay resilient. One of the challenges I faced was learning the English language. At the beginning when I arrived the U.S I did know any single word in English and that was upsetting and sad to me because everybody in my school knew how to speak it. English language has always been a difficult language to learn for me. But, I try to not give up and I am improving in it through my diligence. Nevertheless, I was dedicated to develop my English skills through learning and studying new vocabulary words and tried to use them in my daily life dialogues. My growth mindset was pushing me every single day to learn and face my obstacles. I also liked to read a lot of books which improved my reading skills and correspondingly gave me new words and notions. Despite, sometimes I do not understand the senses of the words while reading it I used a dictionary. I listened to music and read the lyrics of the songs because I have told that this is one of the effective methods to learn a language. On the other hand, I have taken plenty of workshops, programs on how to progress in pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar. I know learning a language is hard but what it is harder is to not give up and stay focused on my own work. I have failed a lot of times in the past but once I fail I…

Evolution of women through the centuries In the story, “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins-Gilman (1892) portrays women’s role in society in the late 18th century. The story thoroughly depicts the life of a married woman who is depressed and battling to be free. Freedom of the woman in the story is so intense, and it reminds me that some women are still struggling for certain freedom. In these times, as illustrated in Perkins-Gilman’s story, a woman who wants to be different from what is perceived as “the norms” of the status quo is now considered insane!…

Steve Fidel once has written, “A person who speaks three languages is trilingual; a person who speaks two languages is bilingual; a person who speaks one language is — American.” In spite of the fact, that English language one of widely widespread in the world, it should not use that as an excuse for native born residents of the United States to avoid studying another language. There is a set of arguments why it is necessary to study foreign languages. Two of them it is cultural aspect and expansion of business opportunities. During studying foreign language people start to understand the culture and history of other nation and their own language and culture much better. Also, studying foreign language helps people to keep their mind opened for new things. Evona York has said that, “Sometimes learning a foreign language helps you understand your own language and culture better through comparison, or through the relationship between the foreign language and your mother tongue. For instance, studying Latin in high school taught me an incredible amount of English, because English has so many words that come from the Latin.” Someone can tell that, it is not important to know language and culture of other country and other nation. However, “globalization removes barriers between people.”(Pieracarla Santucci) If the people want to be successful in this world he or she should speak in several languages. To remain monolingual is to stunt your educational development, to restrict your communication and thinking abilities, and to deny yourself the ability to fully appreciate and understand the world in which you live. Learning another language opens new opportunities and gives you perspectives that you might never have encountered otherwise. Personal, professional, social, and economic considerations all point to the advantages of learning foreign languages.…

When I was in high school, I had to take some type of comprehension test every year. I guess it was for students who were registered as English being there second language. I never really understood the concept of understanding what I am reading or writing. When I was in high school the only books I had read were the “Hungry Games” and “A Child Called It”. Other than that I never really read anything else. During my last year of high school my English class read some Shakespeare book. Shakespeare was probably the most difficult reading I have ever done. I hardly understood what I was reading. Reading Shakespeare probably did not have much of a great impact in my reading since I did not understand anything.…

Mandarin, known by many for being one of the most difficult languages in the world, is my mother language. Born in China eighteen years ago, I was raised in a Mandarin-speaking environment. Both of my parents have been speaking to me in Mandarin ever since I was a child. Mandarin is the language I usually spoke when I was in China and even in here I speak Mandarin with my Chinese friends. Studying the first language is a slow and natural process which is affected a lot by the environment. However unlike my first language, my second language, English, did not take a long time to learn. I learned to speak English when I was 8. Since English is compulsory course in my school, I had a one hour English class twice a week. I had an English teacher who taught me from everything from the alphabet to words and from grammar to sentences. But compare to the amount of time I spent speaking Chinese much over powered the time I spent speaking in English. This was of course an obvious consequence of being in a majority Mandarin speaking country. It is unarguable that both English and Mandarin, emerging from their starkly different historic backgrounds are extremely different in their linguistic and spoken styles.…

English is not my native language, but it was always my dream to be fluent in it. I first started to learn it when I was in elementary school in Russia. At that time we never had to write essays, we only studied the letters, numbers and small vocabulary. Later in the high school I learned descriptive topics and was able to tell and write in English about myself, my family, my country and my hobby. The most of my knowledge came from my college, where English was my second foreign language I have chosen to study, the first one was German. I remember having hard time to rehearse around hundred words for each class, to read long classical texts and complicated newspaper articles. However, the hardest part was to translate from Russian to English complying with the syntax and observing lexical rules. Unfortunately I never had a chance to write an essay in English when I was in college and this, I think is one of my weaknesses. When it comes to writing I feel diffident.…

I've been learning English for nearly three years by now. Many years ago, the Chinese Education Authority decided that English should be a required course for The National College Entrance Exam and ever since children in China have to start learning English at the age of 6. Undoubtedly, English is the most important language in the world. Therefore, Proficient in English will have numerous advantages. fortunately, I have realized the importance of learning English and worked hard since I was a child. However, after 10 years of learning English experience I could hardly communicate in English and definitely unable to write an essay, that realy made me frustrating . then, I realized I must make too many mistakes in learning English. it was translating English into Chinese. I just did not feel that learning English is pleasant enough, so i just did it if i had to. At first , every language has its own rules. They usually have different grammar and using of vocabulary, which means learning English by translating it into chinese will lead to an inevitable defeat. For example, I have worked hard on learning a lot of vocabulary by translating them into Chinese. However, those translation processes were hugely disappointing.at that time I failed to express my idea accurately by those translated vocabulary. As a consequence, good grade and improvement seemed untouchable one day I became to reconglize this problem ,desperately and completely stopped translation . one year later, my English was obviously and generally improved. I attribute my success to the stoping of translation. secondly, I am going to talk about reading and writing. They are undoubtedly the key element to learn English comfortably and effectively. Improving English from only doing grammar exercises is usually inferior to reading and writing practice. Only practices can help us to react to the reality. Therefore reading and writing are crucial to our English. For example, I used to study English phrasal verbs for 12 hours before an English exam ,However, i would not read a book in English for 30 minutes every day. The problem is that a huge one-time effort gives you nothing, while small, everyday activities will give you a lot. In conclusion, think in the English way , learning…
