My English Semester Experience
Dear LLD2 Reading Committee:

Throughout my semester of English I have improved a lot by becoming a better writer. I have learned how to organize my ideas by planning out the key points of the article provided. I have improved on my vocabulary in a way that makes my sentences more fluent than how they used to be in LLD1. I have also changed some strategies like revising my own essay by reading it out loud by myself or having a partner reading it back to me because that’s a easy way to catch small errors that you might not catch by reading it independently. I have also increase my strategies on reading articles and finding the authors thesis as well as finding the main points that they use to support there thesis. I also learned on how authors use tone to pervasive the audience in getting there attention more towards the topic and doing above research on the topic. This made me improve my writing by adding a tone towards my essays that way I can get the readers attention and they would want to continue reading my essay. I learned that when doing reports I should read books to find get the support to back up my thesis statement and make my thesis strong and keep my reader interested by reflecting to historical facts that might have happen in the past. I got a good understanding of how books are more detailed and have more information rather than an article. A book has a story to tell and gives more and it address the author more rather than an article that talks about a topic or event and you having to do some more outside information to back up that article and getting a better understanding of it. A book is helpful in a lot of ways because it goes in deeper about the subject and what it wants you to know like “The Color of Water” the author refers to identity. In a book you also have much more connections to it than an article because they are long and you get to visualize what is actually happening in the book, you also get to predict what is going to

The following are three essays that I worked on during the semester. Most of it remains the same, while some of my ideas have developed. The only major changes made were redirecting the ideas in the Where is Waldo Now essay. In English 1102 I struggled with a lot, Professor Grant really challenged what I thought I knew about writing. Being that English is my second language, language barriers normally do not reflect in my speech or writing. I felt that this semester really showed me that I still had work to do. Passive voice, comma slices, forming arguments, and grammar are some of the many skills that I worked on during this semester. I attended the Writing Center as often as I could; I also asked questions during office hours. I worked on perfecting these skills in my other classes as well by reading out loud. By exploring these different options my essay grades improved 15 points. Hopefully my portfolio and future papers reflects the time and practice I’ve put into my writing.…

I am improving in revising my own essay. I have also noticed I have improved on analysis where I had trouble with. At the beginning of this quarter I would usually put one sentence or two and now I am getting the hang of analysis. Also, I am improving in Works cited. This time I think I did well in the organization because I put the archetypes in chronological order, but also a repetition of archetypes. For example, good, bad, good, bad because in life there is always obstacles and it is not always going to be good times. Overall, strengths were the length requirement, which I think I exceeded to do more than the minimum requirement that was 4 pages, improving in MLA format, and citing sources. I have improved in grammar and organization. I think I have improved in analysis and also in my analysis conclusion. My weaknesses, I felt were the paragraphs that did not relate back to my thesis and also the shapeshifter paragraph was not…

When I first started in ENGL 1101, I expected to read old books about Shakespeare or Macbeth. My expectations have been met due to the fact that I learned a vast amount about writing and by what method it takes to construct a proper essay and also the suitable way to add different elements of MLA and citations to a paper. Now I think that reading and writing is a fundamental part of life and that its important to be able to understand and construct an essay that can be beneficial to readers.…

Experiencing and comprehending what each book tells me leaves somewhat of a mark on who I am. Through every word I gain some knowledge or concept that will help further my academic or social sides. Reading a nonfiction book, usually a biography or historical reveals to me what it takes to become a great person, what I need to prepare for in the future, learning to avoid the same mistakes that countless others have already made, and just gives me more knowledge on the topic. These lessons were also learned from the book Night, by Elie Wiesel. Diving into the history of the Holocaust uncovered some questions that I had and in turn made me more interested in the event altogether. I already had delved into the Holocaust by watching movies and reading some books on it, but by reading a real experience of it, it made me put myself in his position and it seemed like I was seeing it through his eyes.…

After a year of focused work in English 250, I feel that I have developed the skill to articulate what I want to convey to the reader in multiple ways. My strengths as a reader have also definitely improved after reading the material we had this semester. We discussed several different aspects of the English language and spent a good amount of time this semester perfecting our ability to write rhetorical analyses. Doing so allowed us to focus a lot of our time on the WOVE method of communication and become better communicators.…

Focusing in self- evaluation to improve the learning process, help me to set goals and be aware of my own mistakes. When the English Composition course started, I wanted to be able to express my thoughts and my ideas in an effective way. The process of writing for non-native speakers of English is kind of difficult. For me, the American style of writing is very narrow, and my style is completely different. I found myself having trouble sticking to a thesis, because I had so many ideas that I did not know how to organize, and that was the primary purpose of taking this course, to learn to make my writings more organized.…

Well, I can now say after reading last week's article by Hass and Flower and this weeks Penrose and Geisler's which was about how important rhetorical reading is and can help understand what you are reading, has opened my eyes to that fact that these are only part of why I have trouble with writing. As I reflect on past writing assignments, I now see it could have been due to my lack of experiences within certain rhetorical situations. Now that I have advanced my education and have gained additional experience on how to approach writing differently, my style of writing seems to flow better, and has become less intimidating. Which has lead to fewer sentence fragments; consistent grammar and being less critical, this has helped me, become a more knowledgeable writer. I can now say I am more like Roger and less like Janet because I now can connect the texts I am reading with real world events or things that have happened within my own life. Ultimately, I have now found that being a more experienced student has helped me improve how to read between the lines and not read just to paraphrase, it has also helped me write a better structured, more comprehensive, and well-organized essay using better examples. The important part of these readings…

I have learned that revising your writing makes it way better than before. You find your mistakes and realize you can replace words such as “bring to” to a different high vocabulary word such as “cease”. I know now that there is no way to make your paper perfect. There will always be a word, words, or sentence you could change. In addition, I’ve gained a better understanding on passive and active sentences. Once I was done writing my paper, and began to reread it I found some passive sentences. All I did was revise the sentence which helped my writing flow better. Initially, I read the first paper I wrote for the Quarter 1 Writing Assessment and I noticed that I didn’t follow the directions completely. As I read on, there were many simple sentences and not many transitional words.…

My work from the beginning of STEP to now has drastically changed especially in my writing. I never enjoyed writing essays because I did not do well with writing under pressure. After completing my essay, I felt confident about what I produced. However ,when my essay was handed back, it was noted that I lacked vocabulary, figurative language and my sentence structure was poor. After being in class, I have improved on my essay writing skills. I used more vocabulary terms than I usually would in my essays, had better sentence structure, and completed the entire essay with time to spare to check it over. In addition I learned that i have been using seven deadly writing sins in my writing. Continuously writing and having my peers edit my work helped me eliminated those sins from my writing. When school starts again, I will be prepared to write a timed essay with the new skills I have attained.…

When the semester began I thought to my knowledge that my writing was that of good quality. Though I had a good basic understanding of the format of an essay or letter I still had a lot to learn. My writing changed in many ways such as learning to eliminate unnecessary wording in my thesis, the use of synonyms, analyzing quotes and writing abstract to concrete thoughts or ideas. This Class not only helped enhance my writing abilities but to also better evaluate the writings of others and forced me to acknowledge the rigorous work of future courses in college.…

Over the course of this year in English, I think my writing process has excelled the most along with my overall writing. In the past, I have used similar techniques to develop a final essay, but, this year, I have begin to rely more heavily on planning out and slowly chipping away at my essays and papers. I believe also that because of this planning the strength of my writing as a whole has grown. Personally, I do not think that I grew in my vocabulary usage. Overall this year, I grew as a writer in ways that I would not have predicted.…
