Joseph Harris’ essay “Revising” (2006 pg.452-69); serves as a guide in how to correctly revise any writing you have ever completed. Harris designates four points that must be taken under consideration while revising. Before getting to the core of his argument, Harris notes that revising is not the same as editing. I have learned that revising your writing makes it way better than before. You find your mistakes and realize you can replace words such as “bring to” to a different high vocabulary word such as “cease”. I know now that there is no way to make your paper perfect. There will always be a word, words, or sentence you could change.In addition, I’ve gained a better understanding on passive and active sentences. Once I was done writing my paper, and began to reread it I found some passive sentences. All I did was revise the sentence which helped my writing flow better. English 101 however, helped me improved the areas in which I was weak in from high school. Before, it was difficult to find the bigger meaning of an article, poem, or any form of writing in general. However, with the help from taking this course I was able to figure out how to add meaning to the essay. I also learned how to add evidence and analysis them better in my body paragraphs as well. It was difficult in the past, but now I gained skills such as outlining, writing rough drafts and the organization needed for a successful essay. When the semester began I thought to my knowledge that my writing was that of good quality. Though I had a good basic understanding of the format of an essay or letter I still had a lot to learn. My writing changed in many ways such as learning to eliminate unnecessary wording in my thesis, the use of synonyms, analyzing quotes and writing abstract to concrete thoughts or ideas. Over the course of the past three months, I have had the distinct pleasure of testing my writing capabilities through the Introduction to College Writing course. I have always had a passion for writing in all forms, but in previous years, the course work in grade-level English classes have been unchallenging of my writing ability. I have been heavily involved in Bonneville High School’s newspaper through journalism since my freshman year. English 101 is an important seminar to its’ students because for most they are able to develop skills that they never previously had. In the class the professor had us critically read The Eater Reader by James Miller and then develop our essays on each chapter. The essays each requires each class member to write an analytical essay on the text in the chapter. The essays then go through a process to make them better. The professor would write down his or her thoughts on the essay and students would read each other’s essays to critique them. That allows the author of the essay to develop the essay into a meaningful piece of work. After that process of completed the next chapter had the same process completed all over again until the book was completed. Once the book was completed we had to expand two essays of our choice. To do that we had to come up with our own unique selection process. Common questions such as (Which material made the most sense to us? Which will be the easiest to make into a 5 page essay? During the revision of my essay I looked for better ways to tell my story, until I was finally finished. I almost felt like I could have spent more time revising my essay and I felt like it was almost like a piece of art. By the time I was done revising I asked myself, “is this any better, or is this all I can do.” In addition, after rereading my essay, changing the paragraphs around, shortening sentences, throwing out words, placing commas, semicolons correctly, using consistent point of view, and then worrying.
