My experience with Theatre
I have taken the course ‘Understanding Theatre’ with hardly any experience in Theatrical activities. As a movie lover, theatre has always been an interest. I always wanted to understand how it worked; as the performances that are put on the stage seems so close to ones heart. It takes us along with it in a roller coaster ride of emotions. The artist cry to make us laugh, they undergo pain to entertain us which in a way is a sacrifice of not only their body but also their mind. To suppress ones originality and equip with the characteristics of another is never easy. And to do this whilst making sure that justice is done to the people watching it makes it even more interesting and difficult. When you take a look at Theatre from the outside, it seems fairly simple. But just like anything in life as you go deeper into it, we understand the complications in it. When looked at the earth from above, the grounds seem to be all green, but it is only when you come down to it, we realize that it is filled not only with trees but with sand and stones too. Why I mentioned this is because I want to convey the type of understanding that I had of theatre before taking up this course. For me, just like many, theatre was just another form of entertainment and life in it is just as easy as it looks. But after taking up this course I realized how narrow minded I was. Theatre is both Science and Psychology in itself. All of life is a theatre. It is evident from our history too! From the very beginning of human life and through its growth, theatre’s always helped men understand ourselves and not only about ourselves but also our relationship with the world outside of us. It is human nature to be curious and question everything that comes our way. The question that’s been hanging around for a long while is “What is our role in a relationship with this world?” And through this course I’ve understood that the basic elements in theatre, no matter how vague they seem are always in the same lines of life. Every human being, irrespective of where, how, when he was/is born is born with some kind of artistic sense. But to develop it requires the right kind of guidance and an inspirational figure who is ready to spread his knowledge to any who is willing to learn, and luckily through this course I’ve been able to get such a person. As the course went on I realized that in theatre like in no other field, we use it as a medium to express feelings, and meaning that the audience viewing it will get an opportunity to experience what we want them to experience. I’ve also got an answer to the following question. Why do we have theatre? And how is it important? Theatre is important because we are all human beings. And as human beings all of us look to quench our needs. And among them are food, shelter, security and more importantly display and need for emotions. In other words all of us want/need to be Self Actualised. We want to create or we are meant to create. The biggest thing that one can create is an experience. Unlike other forms of art where there is an expression of emotion, theatre as a whole is the expression of experience of a human life. We have theatre, in other words theatre exists even today because the experience is real. The experience that both the artist and the audience live in is a created world living. The situation irrespective of whether in real life or in the theatrical play may be real or made up, but the experience due to that is completely real. And it is because of this that theatre creates another world in the world that we live. And eventually because of this theatre also has the potential to change lives and influence the real world that we live in significantly. I also learnt to appreciate the theatrical process and theatre as a whole. It has helped me not only to understand but also to communicate ideas effectively to others whilst understanding their level of interest and intellectuality. Also I’ve learnt something my professional studies would never have taught me, that is Communicating with the body. Body Language is something that has to be understood and not learnt to completely realize the value of it and implement it. All of world is a theatre and the beings in it are characters, actors and the non-living objects are the props. And this is true when you consider the actuality, the naked fact of the theatre. We look for answers, question everything around us, and go to all sorts of places to find it. We realize that we are just being directed to do things. We look at the land, we look at all the living beings around us, we feel the air that surrounds us, we look at the water that quenches our thirst, we look at the skies above us, and looking at all of these we realize that the worlds just playing to our tunes, changing situations, change in peoples mentality, and more importantly the emotions with respect to one an other. Again, through this class I realized that the statement I learnt is completely true and valid. “Just like the settings in the theatre, our bearings and our presence is just like a costume on the body of an actor and theatre is the magic of nature, and in this great mothers (Earth’s) play, we all perform our little roles.” And as far as I consider myself after this course, I’ve learnt to appreciate the critical perceptions of the theatrical aspects. I’ve also learnt to respect other cultures without questioning their beliefs and philosophies. The worlds the grandest stage of them all and the one thing that I learnt is that I am a small part of it who can make a big impact on this world’s stage. That’s due to the personality and confidence that I’ve gained through the period of this course. To conclude it what I learnt is something that will never leave me. When we look into ourselves just like we look into others, have the self-confidence and belief; then we by ourselves are the kings, the most powerful agent to change the world. When we look into ourselves and concentrate on ourselves, bow down to learn things that can never be learnt as a student, then at that moment of time we are our own teachers.

Theatre is a direct reflection of life and society. Any script is written, including their themes and genre, in the attempt to draw on and display our surrounding world to ultimately impact audiences. Our unit of drama including Matt Cameron’s Ruby Moon and Jane Harrison’s Stolen does exactly this, but more specifically reflects on contemporary Australian culture and events. This combined with our experiential learning proved that theatre indeed is a mirror to society.…

When dwelling upon the main developments of the theatre, one turns to look at the origins of its birth, therefore focusing upon the Ancient Greeks. A lot of the theatre in which is established today comes from the activities of Greek Worship. The Greeks worshipped their Gods, including ‘the worship of Dionysus; the God of fertility and wine.’ (Gascoinge; History of Theatre, 2001 ongoing.) The Greeks worshipped their Gods through the use of sculpting, painting, music and literature, alongside this they incorporated dance, music and drama. As many of the Athenian’s were illiterate, Greek Theatre was used to explain to the communities the literature in which was written, allowing them through ‘reading artistic signals’ (Michael Walton, J; The Greek Sense of Theatre, Pg.4) to understand ‘the world about them, their fellow men and their Gods.’ (Michael Walton, J; The Greek Sense of Theatre, Pg.4)…

The play that my group and I read and presented was Behind Closed Doors, a play with the concept of, Tragedy in your past can affect your present if you do not let go and move on. The role I played was the director, which is a role in the theater, that’s very much so unappreciated. The purpose of the presentation project was to actually understand, hands on, what it takes to produce a Theatre play, and what the jobs and elements are to do so. In theatre, communication is key. Every job works in harmony with one another, and they all need each other to put on an incredible show.…

It is a truth that in such a technologically savvy and dependant generation as today 's, venturing to the theatre is slowly becoming a rarity. This is due to the strong, extensive domination of film, television and new media, clearly eminent in the present entertainment industry. Live theatre in Brisbane is constantly competing with the comfort and affordability of staying in and enjoying a pre-recorded television show or watching a 3D movie in one 's own home. There is next to no motivation for people in today 's general public to attend a theatrical performance leading to the classification of live theatre as passé and dated. However this does not in any way signify that the quality of theatre has degraded. For those who enjoy the emotive and interactive experience of attending live theatre, Brisbane has an array of diverse shows that are perfect indicators of the level of high quality theatre that is available to the community. In fact through the thorough analysis of three different levels of productions: Wicked, Summer and Smoke and Lying Cheating Bastard this essay will attempt to prove that through the manipulation of the elements of tension and relationships within each of these plays, dramatic meaning is created and the quality of theatre is heightened.…

“In theatre, you can change things ever so slightly; it’s an organic thing. Whereas in film, you only have that chance on the day, and you have no control over it at all,” These insightful words were once spoken by actress (Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace) and Oscar winner Judi Dench, and they very clearly illustrate one of the biggest differences between theatre and film. However, a small hint of bias seems to be depicted in this point of view. The quote (and many others) seem to suggest that one form of acting is more difficult than the other. It seems the opposite is true; that when taking one of these art forms (i.e. theatre) and transforming it into the other, one would come across a wide array of differences, as well as similarities.…

OPRF high school is brimming with diverse cliques, groups, and clubs. But one particular cohort seems to stand out from the rest. The theatre department, overseen by Michelle Bayer, can be described as a whirlwind of activity, with 10 official productions each year. My group researched it for the education unit, but the majority of them were unfamiliar with the activity, and I felt the overall presentation was unrepresentative of what high school theatre is. It can be characterized, primarily, by an abundance of drama, both in the acting sense, and in the social sense. Theatre kids are infamous for their diva-like attitudes, and occasional entitlement. I had the opportunity to observe these behaviors up close and personal with my shows I participated in this year.…

Audition week. The second most nerve wracking experience a theatre kid has to go through. You’re all alone on a blank stage staring at a panel of directors making a choice about the next three months of your high school experience. Although it may be scary, the directors are just your biggest fans. They want to see you succeed, and that is what everyone who walked in and faced the directors did! They are all incredibly proud of everybody who auditioned, but sadly they could not take all 70 people into the next step, callbacks. 40 people all fighting for about 7 leads is the most stressful event I can imagine.…

Speaking at the August 1992 Republican National Convention, Patrick Buchanan uses various forms of compelling language to motivate his “Buchanan Brigade” and the other convention attendees to support George Bush in the upcoming November Presidential election. “I do believe deep in my heart that the right place for us to be now, in this presidential campaign, is right beside George Bush. This Party is my home. This Party is our home and we've got to come home to it. And don't let anyone tell you any different,” (Buchanan 4). Patrick Buchanan undeniably pledges his wholehearted Republican Party support for Presidential candidate George Bush through his sarcastic, declarative tone critical of the opposing Clinton administration, by utilizing powerful repetition, and through asking persuasive rhetorical questions.…

Theatre imitating life. Naturalism brought science into the game, with more electricity in theatres, removal of audience, putting them in the dark as if they were eavesdropping. Importance of everyday and ordinary. Potential tool for improving humanity by showing the wrongs. Brought in the fourth wall, analytical distance. extending the idea to the imaginary boundary between the audience and the stage. Character is more important than plot/action. The model of theatre as scientific ideas and the idea that human beings are distinguished by society, like showing the subject as a product of social forces.
