My Favorite Book Dear judges and respectful competitiors, today I am going to talk about My favorite Book. Just like Forrest Gump said, “Life was just like a box of chocolate, you never know what you’re gonna get.” We may be rich, we may be poor. We may win, we may lose. But if your are optimistic to confront every adversity coming your way. You can be a winner of your own life. When I was ten years old. I read a book named “The Elephant Man” The Elephant Man. The elephant man’s name is John Merrick. He was a nice man but he looked unusual. His head was as big as a baby elephant. Because of his strange appearance his family gave him away to an owner of a freak show. John became one of the main hit in the show. Whenever the audiences saw him, they always gasped at the way he looked. John was uncomfortable and scared in front of people, but he had nowhere to go except staying in the freak show. The owner of the freak show bullied him. His colleagues in the freak show was unable even to fend for themselves. Without any resistance, he did all the labor work the owner told him to do. Luckily, his life changed when a British doctor, Frederick Treves, saw him in the show. Dr. Treves tried to help him. He took John to a hospital to study on him, and tried to give him a place where he could live a normal life. Dr. Treves shared John’s story with the public, many people started to noticed him and tried to know more about him. He started to make friends even the famed actress Madge Kendal came to visited him.
But life doesn’t always turn out the way we wanted it. The owner of the freak show found out where John was. He took John back to the freak show and went on a show tour to Europe. John was again brutalize and treated like an animal in a cage, but this time he has some friends. His friends in the show helped him to flee. He was finally back in the hospital in London, but he was in a bad shape. He suffered from a serious lung disease and was dying. Everyone closed to him was sad about his death but he was calm facing it. In the end, he died a peaceful death in his sleep.
I like this book because it touched my heart. I was so angry when I read about how John was treated by the freak show owner. I think the owner was a very evil person. He puts his own advantages infront of other people’s life and dignity. On the other hand, I admire the doctor’s courage to help John. Dr. Treves was just like a lighthouse in the storm to John. Through Dr. Treves, John was able to know and feel the better side of humanity. And I also learned that even in the darkest alley of life, if we keep trying and hope for the best. The light of hope won’t be far from us.
