My hometown, Zhanjiang, is at the southwestern end of Guangdong Province, facing Hainan to the south. Our dialect in downtown districts is Cantonese, while the people in most counties speak Leizhou dialect.
She is a livable city, enjoying a tropical and subtropical monsoon climate with low altitudes. Also, influenced by the ocean climate, she escapes the heat of the summer and the chilliness of the winter.
With a rather long coastline, Zhanjiang is an excellent tourism city in China, whose air quality ranks among the top five in our country. Coming to Zhanjiang, you can see the beautiful blue sea, and enjoy the amazing subtropical scenery. There is no question that the main attraction of Zhanjiang is the seafood. She has many fishing ports which supply fresh and plentiful seafood that is cheap but of high quality. Among the many offerings are all manner of fish, shrimps, and sandworms, seaweed, abalones, and sea cucumbers. We local residents love our seafood lightly cooked, usually quickly boiled to retain all the natural sweetness, It is little wonder then that there is a popular saying in my hometown:”If you want to eat really fresh seafood, don’t let the fish come to you, go to Zhanjiang.” Seafood sold in Guangzhou cannot be considered fresh in our eyes. To us, it must be just out of the sea.
One thing worth mentioning is that the port of Zhanjiang is one of the eight major ports on coast of mainland China, serving as a shipping outlet for much of Southwest China with an annual throughput of more than 2,600 million tons, The deep water port plays an important part in Zhanjiang economy,
Zhanjiang, my dearest hometown, is the apple of my eyes.
