My parents and I are immigrants, we moved to Canada when I was 3 years old and have moved around the country several times since then. When my parents first came to Canada they had nothing, aside from the clothes in their suitcase and a couple of dollars. I saw my parents struggle to find a job and housing, and establish a life for themselves in a new country where the culture, customs, and language were bizarre and foreign to them. However, despite barriers, such as the rise in discrimination and racism against South Asian Muslims after 9/11, stacked against them, my parents prevailed and built a home for themselves and raised a family here. Knowing how difficult it can be to find a job and start a new life in a new country, he let us live with his family in his small Toronto apartment, even though accommodating us put a strain on him and his family. Then, when we moved to Montreal, before we found an apartment to live in, another one of my dad’s friends took us in and allowed us to live with them. Thanks to these individuals and their selfless acts of kindness and graciousness we were able to settle into a new lifestyle with ease.
